Welcome to the Bi-monthly Sculpting and Converting challenge. This time you have chosen....

Kingdoms of the East

Image

In this challenge you have several options to take part:
- Sculpt from scratch (starting with or without armature/metal wire/...)
- Convert an existing miniature (to a new or another character or race/region, to change it's situation, rank, pose, wargear, ...)
You may sculpt/convert more than one character should you choose to do so but please bear in mind only 4 finished pictures can be submit for the vote.
Only one entry per person per challenge. So choose carefully!

2. To enter the Sculpting & Converting Challenge, the miniature you are converting must not be converted nor painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-converted'.
Re-converting an already converted miniature is NOT allowed!!
When sculpting from scratch, you must picture proof this with your blank armature/metal wire/... aswell as a work-in-progress-picture as valid proof.
All "proof-pictures" MUST either have the announcement-screen of the running challenge in it's background, or contain a small note with the announced theme and date written on.

3. You may join the Sculpting & Converting Challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of your completed work by midnight GMT of OCTOBER 31ST 2013 . WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.
You are allowed to use any sort of sculpting epoxy, aswell as scratchbuild materials (such as metal wire, plasticard, rivets, chains, ...).
You are allowed to use parts from other miniatures (such as weapons, heads, banners, arms, horses, ...).
Your final work must stay UNPAINTED and contain 4 pictures; showing FRONT, BACK, LEFT and RIGHT side.

4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed sculpts/conversions. Votes should be cast not simply on sculpting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of techniques, artist improvement, originality etc. There is no prize available for the winners of this challenge, the challenge is solely for community participation and as an incentive for people to improve their sculpting skills and to encourage creativity onto their shelves.

5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months Sculpting & Converting Challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

So I got a little ahead of myself and forgot to post my proof pic before I started... Still without further ado here we go!!

I had 4 spare archers that I had that I don't need to incorporate into my army list so I figured they would be utlized as the basis for this challenge.

Image

So I figured I would just go crazy and convert some small projects to see what the results would be. Here is the progress so far. From left to right, Khamul, Amdur, and a War Priest. My dog figured that my armature that I created for Khamul was a chew toy (hence the missing arm wire) and I managed to save what I could. The remaining figure will probably be a captain once I get the casting done on the spare pikes. Stay tuned.

Wow these are looking promising already. I like the dynamic poses you've chosen.

WIP pics to be uploaded tonight Pacific Time...

Khamul is complete and Amdur is about 70%.

Just got back after a week and a half of training so it's time to get back to sculpting!

Poor picture as I didn't have the time last night to setup the lighting appropriately.

I will take better shots when all my figures are completed.

Thoughts, tips, criticism welcome.

Amdur is about 95% complete. Still need to adjust the helm a bit as well as add a longer cloak. Pictures of progress should be up on Friday or Saturday with my new cheap milk jug lightbox. 8)

Last should be the War Priest. Won't touch him until Amdur is complete.

Nicely done Son of Éomund, I've never given much thought to Easterling conversions beyond swapping swords for pikes.

It's also been a while since I've done any sculpting or converting so I'm going to try a easterling warrior conversion to get back into the swing of things. I thought about converting him into a sword master of some sorts but settled on making a war priest as it seems to have more potential for fluff'n'stuff.

and the War Priest pose I'll be working towards...

Very nice work on the swordmaster, he looks very dynamic! Cool pose! Same on the war priest! But I think right now I would give my vote to son of Éomund because he sculpted from scratch! Maybe you could add some more details with green stuff or so?

It is amazing what with a few cuts here and there, how drastically different the overall look of a mini can be transformed. Top conversions!

Sound guys.
Son of Fundin, I'll be adding greenstuff and extra bits as I go along, those poses are just there to give you an idea of how things will look and are coming along.

Love the simple conversions! I have been so swamped with work in the past few weeks I haven't had too much time to devote to anything else. My original goal of completing a War Priest as well didn't exactly pan out...

Last night I did manage to complete my light box and experimented taking some photos of my completed sculpts. Granted I also picked up Amdur and realized I'm not quite satisfied with a few elements on him but for now I will probably just submit for the challenge and do a bit of rework later. Expect uploads tonight.

That is your opinion. People here are free to do what they want within the challenge criteria and should not be discouraged from doing so. It doesn't matter whether or not they were in the movie or not. They are an official faction of middle earth. Whether GWs vision of them matches yours is entirely irrelevant.

Yes and i was voicing my opinion as im sure some people may agree or not agree with me , freedom of speech after all. I was mainly trying to see what everyone else thought of them.

My entries for the this sculpting/conversion challenge. I hope you enjoy. The pictures were taken in a somewhat darker area and my camera didn't quite do them justice. When I have more time I will try and put up some better shots.

First up, Khamul the Easterling.

Lastly, Amdur, Lord of one big blade.

Wow! I love both those models, Especially Amdur. Thanks for sharing your talents with those of us who are absolute novices at it
