I recently bought this game as a gift for my son (oh, ok, for me really but he gets to play with the figures). I was wondering if anyone has had a go at it and what they thought about it.

I am contemplating getting it later this year - all I hear about it is good, the rules are straightforward and it is a straight out of the box and start playing game which can be very handy for when time is short. The pre-painted minis look fine and I have heard of people adding to this or altering them, for instance creating alternative marking for rebel fighters belonging to squadrons other than Red.
I suppose it is also a bit of a nostalgia trip for me - sci-fi and fantasy books were how I started, then along came Star Wars, Excalibur and all the rest.

Hi, i play x wing. I have to say i love it. I think its simple enough to play but can be made more complicated with extra weapons and upgrades if you want to or once you are used to the rules. Plus the big kid in me gets to play with star wars ships.

The only down side is the price of the ships, particularly the larger ones, but its no worse than lotr really on that side, and comparable to wings of war which is a very similar concept.

I'd happily recommend it to anyone who loves star wars.

The game play is apparently similar to the Wings of War/Glory game, which I own, so I'm hoping it will be quick and easy to pick up and run with. The minis are pretty cool looking and it is after all... Star Wars. So expect a few asteroids and a Death Star Trench sometime in my future.

This is my new favourite game. I have bought 2-3 of every expansion and 2 starter sets. I love playing it, so fun and easy to learn.
Must say I love wedge antilles, his special rule is beastly.

Side note: if anyone one down south east way wants to play or learn to play, shout me. I have enough for two players.

Yup, got it and love it. It's a very tactical game and plays really well and fairly quick. If there is one downside it's not quick to design your forces with the dozens of upgrade cards you can choose from, you do need to sit down and work out the synergy between various pilots and abilities if you want to be competitive, or a nicer way, just play with the characters you like and add on a few torpedoes and R2 units.

Never played that one, I did play the Star Wars Miniatures game (by wizards) the space battles packs were a blast so if its much like that I'd recommend it.

Wow, a resounding endorsement all round. Thanks everyone.

@Heinz, Simon suggested that GN might run a couple of tables of it at Little Wars and I think that's a great idea, I played a demo with one of your members at your last open day, but then I got dragged away by Greg to defend Orthanc against some pesky tree-monsters and I didn't get to go back to it.

I've got it, and think it's great. It plays well and quickly and there is a good amount of variation due to different pilots.

I've heard a lot of grumbling about the cost of expansions, and while they are on the expensive side I still feel they are worthwhile. You aren't just paying for the ship, but also a movement dial and a whole load of new cards and associated rules. And the ship miniatures are great!

I must say, Y-wings are turning out to be the shiz, very tough to kill and the never fail to let me down. Caused Darth Vader to fly into an asteroid today and blow up :D

I sent boba in slave 1 floating off the board yesterday when he had hardly taken any damage (just the one shield loss from the ion cannon). To say that was satisfying, or soul destroying depending on which side of the table you're on, is an understatement.

I like it. The best value is the Core Set, you'll want two (or possibly three) to get the most out of things.

Has anyone noticed the resemblance between Dag's avatar and one of the many classic Darth Vader poses? Darth Dagorlad...
I can hear the voice saying 'I have you now!'
If that standard of painting is how the minis come straight out of the box, even more reason to love it.

This game seems to have taken off big time. I'm not a Star Wars fan, is Wings of Glory any good?

Wings of Glory is very good. It's quick to learn and fast to play and rewards the tactic-minded player. It scales up well to many airplanes and many players too.

I played X-Wing against my son, but made the mistake of beating him in our first game. He had two ships and I had only one, but the X-Wing is a tough little beast and shots just seem to bounce off it. So now he's reluctant to play again, which is a bit disappointing.

Just a heads up to anyone who is interested.

Wave 1 is now out of stock in most online stores (especially Y-wings & Tie advanced) but you may be able to get the expansions via your local store.

Wave 2 has just been re-released (A-wings, Tie Interceptors, YT-1300 and Firespray). I would recommend picking up at least 2/3 A-wings and interceptors as this may be the last chance for a while that they'll be on sale at retail.

Wave 3 (B-wings, Tie Bombers, HWK-260 and Lambada Class shuttle) is due out end of August with many stores offering pre-orders. Again, I would recommend pre-ordering what you want as judging by the hype on the FFG forums, stock won't hang around.
