In what way did Gandalf mention Tolkien's revisions of the Hobbit?

That was a bit of a random statement

Decidedly odd, but when I pressed "post" I was convinced I was the first person answering the relevant question... It's magic!

Can you explain what you are looking for in your quiz question. From the wording I can't work out if you are thinking of revision changes to the Hobbit as a result of Tolkien writing LOTR, or differences in LOTR that resulted in changes to the Hobbit as revisions.

We all know about the reworked 'Riddles in the Dark' chapter that was changed from its original form by LOTR but I'm scratching my head about what changes it might be unless it is something to do with differences in Gandalf and his his meeting with Thorin and that sparked off the quest for Erebor.

Sorry, it should be "In what way did Gandalf (in FotR) mention the changes that Tolkien made to the Hobbit".

Gandalf recounts in the "The Shadow of the Past" that Bilbo was lying and under the influence of the One Ring Ring) to strengthen his claim to it.

He describes it as Bilbo's strange story of how he won it, how he could not believe it and finally got the truth of him.

In the Hobbit Tolkeien just has the line

"Gandalf gave Bilbo a queer look from under his busy eyebrows" and the fact that Bilbo wonders if he has guessed at the part of his tale he left out.

The true events are explained in the Prologue to the Fellowship of the Ring and how Bilbo even set down his original story in the Red Book.

Few possible answers (just delved into the book.)

'The eagles are coming'

OR

'Stand, Men of the West! Stand and wait! This is the hour of doom.'

OR

'The realm of Sauron is ended!'

I was looking for this one

Stand, Men of the West! Stand and wait! This is the hour of doom.'

I think the Eagles are too early and the third one is too late.

Over to you ;-)
