Thanks again for all great feedback! Here's the latest update on the final two models. Other than a minor bit of touch-up on the banner, I think I've finished the conversion phase of this project. Some of the conversions came out better than others and there are some things that I could probably improve but all in all I'm quite pleased with the results.

Okay, moving on towards the painting phase again.... and I need some advice!

I'm going to be tackleing Bifor or Bofur next and they are described as having a "Yellow Hood". I don't want to paint their cloaks with a bright yellow as I think it would be too much of a contrast with the rest of the army. Can anyone suggest any color schemes that would be muted enough that they wouldn't be bright yellow but would still match the intention of the a "Yellow". Maybe something along the lines of Desert Yellow or Iyanden Darksun with a touch of golden yellow for highlighting??

Thanks in advance!

Iyanden Darksun highlighted by mixing in Bleached Bone for highlights should work nice. :)

Or Bestial Brown/Snakebite Leather (40:60), pure Snakebite Leather, Snakebite Leather/Bubonic Brown (50:50) and add in a little Bleached Bone for the final highlight.

:)

Thanks for the feedback. As you'll see below, I ultimately settled on using the Iyanden Darksun color.

Update on some of my painting now.

Here's the basically finished Dwalin. I went back and changed his belt to be brown with a silver buckle. I also finished up the cloak on this model and added a bit of shading in the beard.

Next up is Bofur. Bofur (and Bifur) are described in the book as having yellow hoods (i.e. cloaks). Not wanting to use a very bright yellow I opted for a design using the Iyanden Darksun as a base. I also used some Marigold Yellow (from the Reaper line of paints) and bleached bone to highlight. I'm pleased with the effect.

In addition, I pained up this model who was destined to be Bifur. However, during the painting of this model, I realized that hated pretty much everything about it. I've been bothered with my efforts on the conversion of him for some time and I was hoping I could paint my way around some of the rough stretchs of the conversion. However, nothing I tried worked. I almost scrapped the whole project out of the frustration! For what its worth, I painted him first before moving to Bofur where my confidence was restored. However, I still don't have any good feelings about this miniature. I'm already looking at new options to convert another ranger and scrape this one all together!!
Image

Lastly for today, I started painting Gloin. I'm really pleased with how the face on this model turned out (given that its basically covered in a hood). I even managed to pull the eyes off! However, he's an impossible model to get a good picture of! I tried to do some different things with the painting of the leather armor on this one. He actually looks much better in person than these crappy pictures. I'm a bit nervious about his cloak. It needs to be white so I've started with a basecoat of Astrominicon Gray and Skull White. I'm worried that imperfections in the conversions might really show up in this cloak. We'll see when I start tackling the shading and highlighting.

Finally, someone asked for a Group Shot of the whole crew. So here you go:

Awesome work, Brent! The yellow looks good, on both of the models. Seeing all of the miniatures together in one pic is also nice, they all look great. It's going to be one amazing army once you've finished it! 8)

Great work. The cloaks could be a little smother but otherwise it is great. The colour scheme on Gloin is very nicely done and I think I'll try something similar on Gimli. Can you give basic overview of colours. I don't use GW paints and don't want too specific details but something like brown boots, brown tunic, etc. would be nice. It will be nice to see them all done, do you have an interesting diorama in mind?

Thank you for the comments. The white spots are actually glare from the lights. I washed this heavily with Baddab Black and although they are supposed to be Matte finish it is still a bit shiny. Should get knocked down when I apply the Matt Varnish!

However, I like Erunion's suggestion of foam!
