Okay, my question may seem stupid. When we say " I primed a model" what do we mean? I only know what priming is in relation to houses... lol. If I assume correctly it's something that hepls the paint from chipping away? If that's the case can you instruct me on the method of priming. I hate it when metal models laboriously painted start to lose flickers of paint. And the varnish, even the mat one, is just too shiny.

To prime a model is to give it an undercoat of paint that helps all the other layers adhere and prevents chipping, as well as giving you a solid base for the colors. Most prime with some sort of spray that bonds to the miniature, and you can prime a model in any color, although most tend to work from a black/grey/white base.

So if I prime a miniature black I obviously don't need to undercoat it afterwards correct? Can I prime a model that has already been undercoated, will it affect the prime in any way?

prime is an undercoat.If you spray prime a miniature you can start painting it when i dries.
Spray prime is better than brushing because spray leaves an even coat of undercoat and the detail of the model isnt affected.

Prime and undercoat is the exact same thing in this hobby.

Paint it black (or white or whatever colour you prefer) and then start painting it as you desire.

Primers aren't the same as any colour, a primer has a different chemistry to help it adhere to the model. The normal paint adheres better to a proper primer/undercoat than it does to the model itself.

Nope. The whole point is that you clean up your figure, then prime it (because primer sticks better to bare metal/plastic than normal paint does) then paint it.

If you already have paint on the figure your options are to just continue, and hope it doesn't chip, or to strip it, prime it, and start over. You would put varnish over the paint once you're done to stop chipping.

Ok, when preparing your models follow this process.

Cut them out of sprue
Clean up the flash and mould lines with a file.
Glue them into the base.
Buy the GW chaos black spray paint and undercoat the models with that
Paint them as you wish

So a Chaos black spray functions exactly as a primer and undercoat? And one more question, how can I strip the paint without harming the models?

To strip them of paint, simply soak the minny in metholated spirits for a while, then scrub the paint off with a toothbrush. Just be careful with spears breaking and stuff when scrubbing.

You can spray over painted models, it's only that it's a waste of detail. Also, I think methylated spirits eat plastics?

to strip paint of models you can use
1. non-acetone nail polish remove(acetone eats plastic be careful)
2. dettol
3.simple green
4. nail polish remover (acetone)only use on metal
