The only passage that I can find is one where the guards of the Black Gate are mentioned as being clad in steel, but these were not said to be marching TO Mordor, just guarding it.

It's really there, in "The Black Gate is closed", page 639 of my copy.

From my point of view, I answered your question in every way. You asked

"Which kinds of troops are mentioned to be marching to the Black Gate from the East when Frodo, Sam and Gollum are there?"

And I answered:

"There were infantry, all of whom are described as wielding spears (there is no indication as to whether they were wearing light or heavy armor) and horsemen as well, all of these were from the South, and therefore had to be Easterlings or Haradrim. (or Southrons)

So far I have failed to find any other mention of any other armies marching to the Black Gate while Frodo and Sam were looking on.

When you give the wrong answer to a maths test, it does not become right when you say: "I'm sorry, but it was the only answer I could come up with?", doesn't it. I asked for Easterlings, but the answer you gave is about the Haradrim. This is what I was looking for:

JRR Tolkien wrote:
It seemed ass if whole armies were on the march, though for most part they were hidden by the reeks and fumes drifting from the fens and wastes beyond. But here and there he caught the gleam of spears and helmets; and over the levels besides the roads horsemen could be seen riding in many companies. (...) These were men of other race, out of the wide Eastlands...

So the answer is: (Heavy) Cavalry.

LOL I cannot believe this... Whether you believe me or not does not matter, but this is the exact passage I was talking about. I interpreted the "spears and helmets" as soldiers:

"There were infantry, all of whom are described as wielding spears (there is no indication as to whether they were wearing light or heavy armor)"

and as you can see above, cavalry which, as I read it did not have any indicated armor. Your example of a math test is not very accurate, however. A Math test always has ONE possible answer and one answer alone. In this case, we both interpreted the same passage differently, therefore causing confusion. If my answer was not satisfactory, then just go again.

No, since you had the passage I meant, you have the correct answer. Since you mentioned Southrons so prominently, I thought you were talking about the column they see entering later, which is much more talked about.

Well, make it a history test then, they always have several possibilities.

I vote that since this doesn't say "What kind of armor are they wearing?" that the correct answer should just be Easterlings, maybe even just humans. Such a vague question should have a very simple answer. If no one agrees to this, then I vote that Sir Richard gets it.

From what I have read here, I agree with Draugluin.

I said he had the correct answer, so he goes. He did have the right passage after all, so if we had a miscommunication that's not his problem.

Easterlings would be too vague, since it is mentioned that there are horsemen.

Um, they were said to be from the EASTLANDS, so they were Easterlings. I'm ok with Sir Richard going, just letting you know that your vague question should have been simply answered by my vague answer.

To end all conflict, I've decided to give my turn to Draug. Not because he had the correct answer, but because I'm going on vacation for a week and I won't be able to answer yes or no to anything. Personally, I'm just happy with being able to win for once in a very long while... Cy'all later!

Ok then, how about one that has a very simple answer so that there is no arguing? What year was Frodo adopted by Bilbo and at what age?

In 2980, when he was 12 years old (and Bilbo 90).

Wow, I'm sorry! I completely forgot that it was my turn.

Where were Merry and Pippin buried?

Don't worry about it.

They were both laid to rest in Gondor and then later tombed with King Elessar upon his death.

Correct, your go.
(For some reason I didn't see your post under new posts, so I didn't notice your answer.)
