He openly gave himself a Adunaic name and on top of that it meant 'Lord of the West', and previously only Valar had been named like that. And indeed he banned Elvish.

The silent watchers were stone gargoyles guarding the pass of Cirith Ungol ,each was formed of three bodies - one guarding the way into the tower, one the way out, and the third staring across the gateway itself. Their faces were the faces of vultures, with eyes of black stone.
