I am not sure if this is the right forum but what was your first contact with Lotr?

None of your options, I saw a Toybiz Aragorn with Brego and Sharku with Warg Beast in my local Woolworths.

Well my mum used to run a bookshop, and one day after school she was reading ROTK in the shop and I said "what are you reading" she said "the lord of the rings" I asked "what is happening as you're reading" and she told me about gollum's plot to lead frodo and sam to shelob's lair....
And I thought THAT SOUNDS AWESOME i wanna read that :D

Well, the films were coming out while I was at school, and all my friends were watching them. However, my parents wouldn't let me watch the films until I read the books, so I did.

None of the above. I first begged my parents to buy me a comic book with a bearded old geezer and some really short dudes in the cover when I was about seven. That was a comic book based on Bakshi's animated LotR movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077869/) and was as bad as the movie. Somehow it had a great effect on me and a couple of years later I figured out that it was based on a real book. The rest is history...

As a kid I got a Finnish youth novel for Christmas, in which LotR featured quite prominently (Puumajakesä, the Tree House Summer, by Lilian Kallio). After reading and loving it, I went to the local library to find this great book the protagonists liked so much. And so it began.

well, my cousin had rotk on his playstation 2, he had it from a friend, after playing the first levels together I really liked it, two weeks later the fotr was on my television and I decided to watch it. Once I saw all three movies some weeks later, at my local bookshop, there was a magazine with 'the lord of the rings' on the cover. Is was a magazine BgiME, it had the metal Shagrat model, I bought it and so the hobby had started for me :-D

Read the Hobbit first, then LoTR. In 1974-75. A friend and I used to read it in English Literature classes; everyone was supposed to be working through Huckleberry Finn, so we slipped one inside the other and looked busy.

Anyone who calls me 'Grandad' is in BIG trouble. :-X

I read the same book when I was a kid and absolutely loved it! I vaguely remembered that some of the characters from my comic book (e.g. "Reppuli" or Baggins) sounded familiar when I read the book and that was the incentive for me to find out more about the real book. I still have "Puumajakesä" in my bookshelf.

Yeah, they named the cat after Bilbo. :) My copy of the book is at my parents'. We're visiting there next week, I'll have to remember to take it along for my daughter to read.

Via the films. As a (near enough) Birmingham lad, I knew about Tolkien and his connection to Birmingham and knew he wrote some books and even have had the Hobit read to me, but it was seeing FOTR in 2002 that opened my eyes and mind to Middle-earth. The Hobbit was read then the Lord of the Rings then action figures and wargames figures and a career at Sarehole followed.....

I was roleplaying Gurps Rifts at the time and listening to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin back in the early 90's and so discussion came about playing Ice Crowns MERP. since Led Zeppelin were huge fans of the LOTR. It peaked my interest that I had to read the books before I got into it.

My friend had bought some interesting figures with a magazine and he wanted me to help him paint them. I went round his and he had some WoMT and Uruk-hai engineers which we counted as plain orcs. We made our own 'system' how we thought it was played because we had no idea how to play it with only the magazines giving the rules for the soldiers. I went along and bought some of these magazines and some others and then I found the local GW and I went into there. I saw that what I had were siege engineers and I saw the fighting Uruk-hai. I persuaded my dad to buy some for me. I went home, watched the films and read the books.

The books for me, my parents had them and read them to me. Since then I've probably read them more than 10 times each (underexaggeration), then in the year of 2003 (or 2004, I forget) I stumbled across a GW Knight of Minas Tirith. That's what got me hooked on LOTR hobby wise.

My Grandad used to read the book to me all through my childhood so basically I've been hooked all my life - when I found out GW were making a wargame for LOTR I started painting - I made a promise to my Grandad before he died that I would paint the entire Lotr range and pass the knowledge he'd taught me to my own kids. Good luck with that huh!!
