Yes, but where talking about a seasonal magazine, so there will be some time for good articles.

My humble opinion is that we don't really need an online magazine once the site goes back up. I mean, we (will) have an article library, so it makes more sense to me to just put the articles in there. This way, it is all sorted in one place - you won't be saying, "Oh where's that article a read the other day about x, was it on The One Ring, The One Ring magazine, Cheeseweb magazine, an old white dwarf, the archive of TLA, The Palantir, some German Site through Google Translate, etc, etc?" so, unless the articles are also going to be syndicated onto the One Ring's Article Library, it only complicates matters to have a magazine as well as the article library. On the whole, it just creates a whole lot of work for the site admins and the magazine editors, with negligible benefits.

u got point in that. maybe we could prepublish the librairy articles in parts in the magazine b4 getting them into libray. But yeah that might seem double work.

For my part I would say that we have looked at producing a One Ring magazine on a number of occasions, but in the end nothing has come of it. It takes quite bit of effort to produce a magazine and the real problem is doing it regularly. Even one a month is much harder than people think. I was part of a team producing a slightly irreverent unofficial magazine at my work in the days before political correctness and I can remember how hard it was to get it out.

It is a good idea but we do have an excellent community forum even though we are in rebuilding mode at present. As a potential alternative, can anybody think of anything a magazine might be able to deliver that our current forums couldn't ? This could help the Admins of the site tailor the site better to your needs and perhaps suggest some new forums or new features that could be added to the site during the rebuild.

This is just my opinion not the site admins so hopefully you might get one of their viewpoints at some point.

Yes, but first:
- The magazine wouldn't be monthly, more seasonly
- The magaine would produce articles, no discussions, wip's etc. (don't get me wrong, these things are fun to read, but not really articles)
- Then, you could maybe ask me why then don't publish the articles in the library, but then I have to answer you that it's just so cool to see there's a new 'Skavenblight gazette' by ex. due to... I don't know how to call it...
- And about the hard work... Let's just say I could work every day from 6.00 to 24.00 to get this thing off the ground, if you get me.

It sounds like you have got some enthusiasm for this :-)

I'm sorry I didn't pick up on the seasonal idea. That would certainly make it more feasible as you would have a longer lead-time between publications. A few questions come to mind.

1) Would it be purely LOTR focussed or would it include other gaming systems ?

2) I can see how articles, freed from the constraints of writing for the OR article library, would allow more varied articles where more of an authors opinion to be expressed. Could a new forum or improved article library, with say a "my view" section, allow people to be creative and post articles in a similar manner to a newspaper article ?

3) Part of the fun of a forum is expressing feedback to a post. Does the idea of a newsletter seem too passive unless a feedback system was included ?

4) Would this newsletter potentially undermine the idea of people writing articles for the site ?

5) If you are keen why don't you and a few like minded individuals get together and use a thread in off-topic to organise actually producing a newsletter ? It wouldn't be an official one without Alan's blessing but it would be a proof of concept. There is nothing like seeing the actual item to get people
on-board.

I had like another idea - u could do for the magazine
u could also integrate lotr related art stuff;
like story's, poems, comics consisting out of photographs of miniatures with textballoons,...
That might cheer things up and those are things u wouldn't put in the library

Yes, like the WoH got, good idea, it would make things more fun!
And yes, we've already got an article libary, but I've seen many people that created fantastic word docs etc, but just don't have the energy to re-write this in the libary system.
+ Why isn't it possible to put the articles in the libary after the issue, like at Carpe Noctem.
3) Yes, I would maybe put some standard-bearer like thing in it.

=> So why don't put it in the libary ? Well, due to the layout the other fun things (like garm said) like 'write sauron' or maybe some comics.

I don't know if anyone here remembers it, but once upon a time a rather good LotR magazine called the Tengwar Beacon was written by a lot of the members here, at TP, TLA, and CheeseWeb. It was of a high standard, but lasted only for 3 or 4 issues. This idea might just become its successor; I wish you luck with it, and if I can help with anything - perhaps editing, if you want - just let me know. ;)

That game is soo dangeriously addictive.. I've spend a few 100 on it already, no joke! I've retired from it now though. Good work on your alpha, they're all the same (part from delta) but just take more time. Anyway, sorry that was off topic :P

#12: House profiles could be neat especially for characters in Tolkien's universe that hadn't appeared yet. Maybe an article dedicated to Silmarillion characters.

I like garmenhord's ideas; with comics (alternate universe is a must), cover arts and such. Just like GW has those quick sketches in their rulebooks and magazines, maybe some general sketches can be made to go with some articles.

The problem I see Raggbur is maintaining a consistent team of individuals that bring in their own specialties to the magazine voluntarily. The admins are too busy with the sight, so you're going to have to rely on OR members who take interests in this if they have the time. Just who can contribute to the magazine? What team are you looking to put together? Can anyone just come by and drop in their articles or other works to you? If you can get a team of regular contributers that would be great, but you should also accept work from members who just send in something every once and a while. Then you could just choose the best from the litter to create your magazine.

Maybe it will go better once i have finished this master year+ my comic ( i am in the last stage of putting on shadows. But that still need to happen for about 40 pages) and i still need to design a cover,... So quite busy ...

Some time back I attempted a short story, which never really got beyond Chapter II. However, I may be able to write some more at some point, and if I do, that could go in.

I don't want to discourage you, because if you have the drive and motivation to keep at it, it could turn out to be a great success, but you have to realise that these things take a huge amount of dedication and time. To create a fan-made supplement take a hell of a lot of dedication and with those you aren't pressed for time, whereas with a magazine like this, it takes dedication as well as being pressed for time due to being on a fixed release schedule.

Like I said, I don't want to discourage you from doing this, you just need to make sure you have a good team of dedicated people who can put aside the time to work on the magazine. Take into account the things Azog mentioned as well, perhaps go for a different directive with the magazine so that it doesn't take away from and reduce the amount of articles being submitted to the knowledge base.

Good luck with whatever happens with this (if anythings still happening).

Sorry for the late reply,

1) Who can contribute for the magazine ?
Everyone of course! But why should they ? Well, I've seen a lot of people who post very cool stuff in the forums, but don't have the time,... to write a whole article about it. Some people also have some draft articles and there are topics like 'profiles for real people' and the tactical discussions (the results of these topics could really fitt in a magazine IMO). And there are also some unused parts of the libary, which are mostly seen in the forums (like armyblogs etc.). So I'd like to focus more on those people/articles.

2) Who can help ?
Also everyone! But for what sorts of 'jobs' are people really needed ?
- Artwork! What would a magazine be without fresh artwork ? A whitedwarf ? (these things don't have to be very detailled, just some pencil drawings are most welcome)
- Some fiction wrighters (Ingold ?)
- Also important; people who'd like to help me with converting the 'draft articles', armyblogs etc. to things that fitt in the magazine (together with the people who came up with the ideas/drafts of course)
- Anyone who things this is the right place to post something special of course...

Reactions ?
