Any help would be appreciated here please as i am starting out on building an 800 point army of hobbits for a battle in october. I have already painted up some archers, shirriffs and militia but was wondering what the core of my army should be? I dont want to get blitzed and thought maybe archers could form the bulk as they are just as good as elves with a bow. Some advice from other hobbit enthusiasts would be appreciated or from someone who has fought with a hobbit army. Cheers Tooky :pippin:

A couple suggestions 1. Take alot of heroes even with alot of heroes you'll swarm your enemy 2. If your not playing LoME then take some ranger allies because hobbits may swarm you but when you face easterlings and other tough armies you'll ahve some tough support to back you up that's all I got to say

i would take an couple big heroes(as you will need at least one to take on big captains and such), I suggest aragorn though gandalf could work, quite a few ranger of the north, say around 10, then maybe a couple hobbit heroes and fill out the rest with the max amount of hobbits, and max out the archers.

Two really important things for hobbit army's.
1. you need gandalf the grey
2. you need to be at or very close to maximum figures for your points level (75 units for you)
a couple more points,
3. hobbit archers are great, get lots of these
4. grabbing 3 to 10 dunedain is a good idea, they have spears and a point of might
5. get shiriffs rather than militia, it's worth it to pay the extra point
(someone correct me if that last point is wrong, I'm not 100% on that one, all the others are good though) :)

Ok thanks for the advice. Will look to add Gandalf and a unit of rangers to the hobbits.

great to see another hobbit enthusiast!!!! i myself have a vast hobbit army (45 of the little critters) i can tell you that what you need isn archers archers archers!! if you think about it hobbits strength is 2 and their bows strength is 2 so its like having 2 fight rounds. also if this is sbg (which im guessing it is) dont forget their stone throw rule!!!!! it can be devastating to enemy units and can against say urak hai you might be able to pack a punch into their pesky shield wall :-X this is where youll get the annoyance as seeing your bows they will always put a strong shield wall. but with the vast amount of hobbits you have all throwing rocks your bound to kill a couple. also if your fighting elves dwarfs or urak hai dont bother with shirrifs because in draws their fight value will still be beaten!! if this is wotr (war of the ring) your only allowed forgotten kingdoms as allies unless its a perticular scenario so pack in some good hardy warriors like dwarfs for the main army and have hobbits raining cheap arrows down appon the enemy (my wotr army consists of dwarfs with hobbit allies). hooray 4 hobbits :frodo: :sam: :merry: :pippin:

ok thanks, that is really useful info. I wont add too many shirriffs then. I will look up the stone throw rule when i buy the rule book. Looks like i got a lot to learn to get the full attacking strength out of my Shire Border Patrol !!

How about 12? That's how many there were in the Shire traditionally.

I have trouble deciding whether to stick to the story line set out in the novels involving the shire or to let my imagination run wild and build a hobbit army so large that it goes against the text set out in LoTR. Being new to all this after so long out of the hobby, would my second idea be thought of as being "out of order" so to speak?

I would stick to the story line, it feels much better that you can tell yourself you created THE army of the shire as described in he books.

aragon is great for the shire as well (and still works theme wise), cause ur guys r so cheap, you can get gandalf AND aragon AND dunedain AND hobbit heros (the shire has the most might out of all the armies cause its so easy to get)

there are also the sneaky things you can get such as lolibella sacvil baggins (i just massacred her name)

and fredegar bolger is great as well as you get a stand fast for just 5 pts!

also get a horn, then your hobbit army has a zero chance of running cause of all the heros with boosted courage (from the horn)

Dosen't that only affect hobbits?

Yeah but i don´t hink it´s very likely that that Aragorn or Gandalf runs away with their high courage

Hè, hè; would be quite funny if gandalf runs away in the middle of pellenor fields...
