In the thread on Strength the idea came up as to whether to change the "average" Strength and Defense to 4 from 3 just to give a bit of room at the bottom end of the scale.

It's potentially a lot of work, so I'd like to decide and commit before going much further with the other profiles. The real question is, is it worth it?

Pros:
- It would help create a bit of room at the bottom for differentiating between Men and the smaller races (normal Orcs, Dwarves, small Orcs/Goblins, Hobbits).
- Armour benefits stay the same, as heavy armour + shield would result in D7, for which S4 needs a 6 to wound.

Cons:
- Weapons with an intrinsic value would have to have their power increased to accommodate, eg: Bows become S3, Elf bows S4, etc. Hobbit's thrown stones S2...?
- Every profile must be touched. Originally I had thought of leaving spiders, wargs, trolls, etc alone, but with this change their Strength and Defense must be increased as well.
- Sauron loses, as his Defense stays at 10. Maybe he gets a point drop.

S1 - special models like Lobelia
S2 - Hobbits, small Orcs, Goblins
S3 - Dwarves, Orcs, Uruk hai, Sylvan Elves, Sindar
S4 - Men, Half-Orcs, Noldor
S5 - Numenorians, Gondor and Arnor elites, Dunedain

Is it worth it?

My tolkien is a bit rusty (been a while since I read the books) but aren't standard orcs stronger than normal men?

wouldn't changing averages suggests the wounding charts changes too?

Noldor should probably be switched with Numenorians. And, according to Tolkien (or at least what I see) goblins are essentially small orcs.

No, the chart has a regular pattern, so statistically S4 has the same odds against D4, as S3 against D3. It only becomes an issue at D9/10.

S4 vs D4 = 50%
S4 vs D5 & 6 = 33%
S4 vs D7 & 8 = 17%

S3 vs D3 = 50%
S3 vs D4 & 5 = 33%
S3 vs D6 & 7 = 17%

Hmmmm, you have a point. Games Workshop always without fail buggers up the charts on the low end and ends up with only a few high end monsters.

Changing the average to around 4 would potentially open up a lot more difference at the lower end of the scale...

The question is if that variety is going to help the game?

With all the profiles we're altering how, if at all, will this alter the different races' captains?

I suspect all captains gain the following stats but correct me if I'm wrong...

+1 to hand-to-hand Fight Value
+1 Strength
+1 Defence
+1 Attack
+1 Wound
+1 Courage

Do you mean they get these bonuses over and above a basic profile, or that captains would now have, say, 3 attacks instead of 2?

I would think we should stick with the former, as that is the current pattern and seems to work quite well.

I meant those bonuses in addition to the normal warrior profile, with 2 might, 1 will, 1 fate.

Or you could make captains cheaper? but then there would be alot of heroic "warriors" around, casting heroic actions every turn here and there...

Too much paperwork. That's why we've worked so hard to keep Noldor at 1 wound.

Goblin and Orc is the same thing, just two different languages.
