Hello everyone! Welcome to the thread for the May Painting Challenge! I'm setting this up since Jake (Red Corsairs) hasn't been around for a while (and I shamelessly copy all his instructions too). I'm too lazy to put here a traditional photo of the character here, you all know Boromir anyway. Let's run this until June 6th so that we have one month to finish the model. Rules 1. A miniature is decided upon before each monthly painting challenge, this months' being Boromir. It is not required that you paint this mini, however it is preferred. Here is a list of miniatures you can paint for this months' painting challenge, in order of preference: * Boromir * Faramir * Any other Gondorian model, such as Warrior of Minas Tirith or Aragorn 2. To enter the painting challenge, the miniature you are painting must not be painted before starting and picture proof must be shown of the miniature 'pre-painted' (unprimed, undercoated or if you are repainting and old miniature - in its' original paint scheme). 3. You may join the painting challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of June 6th, 2011. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged. 4. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the challenge. The challenge winner will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. In previous painting challenges, the winner and runner-up recieved prizes in the form of gold coins, however with the websites current situation, gold coins are not available to give as prizes, so no prize is available at the moment. 5. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the next months painting challenge, but they are not eligible to win in consecutive months. Good luck with those Boromirs! |

Alright I'll give this a shot. Had this guy primed for over a year now, never got to him and I've been meaning to paint him. If I can't get this done within a month then I guess my heart isn't really into this competition thingy. |

I'll probably need the luck seeing the previous competitions, I may be out of my league, but this is all for fun and motivational to paint. That is the point, no? |

That's exactly the point sacrilege! Good luck to all this month, looking forward to seeing those Boromirs. Thanks Pasi for taking care of this in my absence and sorry to everyone who had to wait a few days for the challenge to get going. |

Alright here's my Borimir after a few days of painting. Couldn't get the flash to work properly, so the lighting is pretty poor. Would like to redo the tree but I'm too lazy to restart again and it might end up looking more horrible. Well, can't wait to see the rest of the other Borimirs out there. I'm sure I didn't set the bar too high. |

I will post my proof pic within the next few days as well as the progress so far. I've actually already almost finished him, I just need to tidy up a bit and do the base. Nice looking Borimir Sacrilege! I think the tree looks great, as does the rest of the free hand, though I personally don't really like the weird looking symbols at the beginning of the banner. His face also looks a little flat, but that might just be the camera. Great job! -Pow |

I wonder how people paint freehand. i tried it many many many and many times. but the only thing i can get right are white hands on uruks armour. yet your very good freehand painting work on boromir inspires my to give it a trie again. very good paint job. well done. |

Well if white hands work out well for u , u can do the rest to . I think the fingers and a correct shape of the white hand are rather hard to do well. Just start out with simple things! like dwarf runes on clothes , or triangles on capes or other basic shapes. If u make a small mistake u can always correct it! Good luck |

Thanks for the comments guys and good luck to you who are participating. I was thinking free-hand to be more common in painting. Do you guys normally use cut-out templates when designing & painting banners? Probably that's a more effective way of getting clean and clear detail, but I'm too lazy to print or pencil a design and cut it out and paint over it. @ PowerOfWill, Yeah the weird symbols were tedious and time consuming to paint. So much trouble for so small a thing, such a little thing... This is the reference I used for painting Boromir: http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll28 ... oromir.jpg So you could see why I was a bit dissapointed in the tree because it's not an accurate depiction which I was aiming for. I painted the branches too large because I misjudged the size, this is where templates come in handy over free hand! |

Okay, my first painting competition ever! Here is my proof pic. Sorry it's blurry, but for those of you who can't tell, it's the Borimir from the MoM set. Here is the progress so far. Overall I'm very happy with how he's turning out. I think I could do better on the freehand, especially on the bottom of his skirt thing. I'll probably touch it up a bit later. Good luck to all the others competing! -Pow |
