Does anyone have the rules from the really old WoTR boxed set, the one with the super tiny 10 or 12 mm armies? I'm curious as to how different they are from the WoTR game we are more familiar with. I'd like to try modelling in a smaller scale, just for something completely different.

I guess I could use the WoTR standard rules and put a dice in the tray to mark wounds (no one will want to remove individual minis, a task surely involving tweezers and a steady hand...maybe a buzzer and light-up nose--oh wait, that's a different game.) but I'm curious about the "beta" rules.

Are you referring to the Battle of Five Armies boxset? I'm not aware of any 10 or 12mm WoTR game.

Indeed, the only small-scale Middle-earth game GW produced was the Five Armies set. I am fairly certain the rules for it were similar to those of another of their Specialist Games, Warmaster. (Having never played either, I am however not 100% on this). You should be able to find a pdf of the Warmaster rules online somewhere - based on the Warhammer universe, it wouldn't be too much work to adapt it to Middle-earth. There are dozens of alternative rulesets out there too by the way; 10mm is quite popular for many historical battles.

On a sidenote, individual basing and figure removal is absolutely possible in smaller scales (if unusual; multi-basing is certainly the norm). Warbases.co.uk now sells 10x10mm square bases for "Minihammer"; a creation of Warhammer Fantasy enthousiasts typically using indiviudally based 10mm figures.

Yes, I was referring to the Bo5A set, I just couldn't remember the name. I will certainly have to try out some of the other rule sets and see if I can't track down the Warmaster rules. Thanks CS.

Battle of Five Armies is indeed part of the Warmaster family of games. Warmaster is the best game GW ever produced, though I sold my BoFA boxed set several years ago.

The Warmaster series is no longer supported by GW, but the legendary Rick Priestly casually maintains a website here:
