Hi all, any thoughts on an effective gondor army? I’ve a game scheduled against an opponent who`ll be playing a misty mountain themed army which will be allied with the fallen realms. There’s a good chance of either a dragon or a mumak being play since he has both and I’ve never come up against either. I’m sure that durburz and druzhag will also be making an unwelcome appearance. It will be a 1200 point game with both forests and stone ruin terrain. This is what ive got so far- BOROMIR RANGERS OF GONDOR X 3 RANGERS OF GONDOR X 2 AVENGER BOLT THROWER X 2 WOMTX5 captain WOMTX4 captain WOMTX4 MTKs x 3 captain and banner MTKs x 3 captain and banner TOTAL 14 mt 1200 points |

Looks pretty solid to me. very infact. And balanced. Not much else i can say. As long as you use bormoirs mighy blow rule agaisnt the dragon or mumak, but you probs already have planned that. good luck. |

You might want to be prepared for both Dragon and Mumak. Good news though, if your opponent takes a Mumak he won't have enough points for any nasty Ringwraiths since according to the Decree of Allies only 25% of an army can be allies. |

There's two alterations I'd make to your army list. First, increase both formations of Knights, three is too fragile (you could drop the banner to get an extra company). Second, I'd try and find a way to fit in another Epic Hero, ideally Faramir. I use three Epics in my 1000pts Gondor army; the ability to move them around formations is, in my opinion, one of their greatest assets. |

I'd lose all the captains and banners and get 270 points in Epic Hero's. If you know you're facing 2 monsters, Legolas comes to mind. Radagast can be handy to hit his Dragon behind the line and to Entangle the Mumak. Theoden as a support role is very good. His Inspiring Leader is nice and free Epic Challenges can freeze the Dragon each turn. Your base army looks good IMO. |

Knights in threes can work very, very well. No need for Banners and Captains to go with them though. I would suggest that Epics with special abilities vs big Monsters are a very good idea. Radagast is very useful (due to Wildnerness spells) vs a Mumak but possibly less so than Saruman the White would be vs a Dragon. Legolas + Aragorn (and Faramir to assist) might fit a theme? Normally I am not a huge fan of Bolthrowers but they *could* work if sitting in defensible terrain that a mumak is parked directly in front of. However, I don't see them being able to hit a Dragon much and if it does come close, it'll probably nuke all 100pts of them pretty easily. DOCdeath, 1000pt Gondor as troops + 3 Epics to lead is a bit of a WOTR standard. |

I can't imagine anyone would play a Dragon & a Mumak in such a low points game. |

The Beauty of Aragorn over Boromir is the liberating feeling that you should always be calling one Heroic/Epic action per turn, anyway. If you are facing a Mumak, then defensible terrain is absolutely the enemy of the Mumak. On the other hand, Dragons love targets in defensible terrain. Whatever else, artillery is always an order of magnitude better in defensible terrain. Pity about the very short range of the bolt-thrower though. |

But surely a dragon and Mumak would have no chance against wave after wave of WOMT? |

Post subject: | Re: gondor needs help!! |
From experience of playing WOMT they really struggle against any sort of monster . They seem to have a great defence but aren't very good at dishing out hits I think they'd have to roll 6s and 4s against a dragon but a dragon just 4s to hit back |

Yes I see that a dragon would kill a lot of WOMT and rightly so, however I can't imagine after spending over half his points on 2 figures he woud have much left to kill the rest of your army |

Post subject: | Re: gondor needs help!! |
They can hold up pretty darned well. It is not infantry that tend to lay them low, it's special hero abilities and certain spells. If they aren't there, they are pretty efficient vs basic foot-soldiers. A Dragon is not unreasonable for even a 1000pt army (since there is no army-break mechanism in this game) and it's not like a Mumak is really all that expensive. |
