Greetings all.

I apologize up front that I don't have access to my WotR book right now. I am wondering if anyone has experience playing or playing against Elfhelm's Legendary Formation. Having seen in so many games how mobility can be so critical to success (ATD, Wings of Terror, etc), it would seem that a cavalry force that can move 12" and have Master Pathfinders would be a very valuable flanking or intercept formation. But I've never seen the formation mentioned in discussions, army lists, battle reports, etc.

Beowulf03809, if I were to take any Rohan Legendary formation, it would be Elfhelm's riders. Cav becoming pathfinders (Radagast is also useful for this) is incredibly useful and makes those units a real threat.... as long as the board has a decent amount of terrain.

They've appeared in one of my Battlereports, dieing ingloriously because the guy pushing them misjudged his angles and distances and failed to get a flank contact on the Pike unit I left out to 'mark' them. He had whipped around that flank very fast though and got to completely ignore the wide stream that ran along it. If he played a bit more and so had his 'eye in' for WOTR, that unit would have been a real threat. I have been severely punished by Rohan Cav with Radagast in them before. It is a shame Elfhelm's boys don't have lances but oh well.

Cheers

Thanks. That feedback is really helpful. Do you have a repointer to that BR? I'd enjoy reading it as I think I missed it the first time around.

I really don't see much use for the other Legendary's (except Kings Guard) as the Epics individually are more flexible and potent but this is one of the few that really have some value for their special rule. I don't really think of Radagast for theme reasons, though it is true having his special rules (including countering charges) is a plus for a strong Cav force.

Here it is: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=19564

Reading it again, I feel a little bad. In my defense, I had played James earlier that year in an event and he came close to beating me then - so I did not do my customary things (pointing out charge arcs for the axemen as he moves Elfhelm's Riders for example!) for when I play guys who play less WOTR than me. I'm supposed to play him this week, and he has again requested my Angmar, so I think that Gondor list is kind of seared into his memory. One thing you can see in that report is the sheer speed with which Elfhelm's boys raced up my left flank. Elphir's unit failed a couple of double rolls and so hadn't shaken out into a line yet (the perils of large armies in cramped deployment zones) and I almost got blitzed.

Thanks. Reading it now.

Yikes! Aragorn and Isildur. Definitively one of those areas I wish WotR had LoME-style army controls but as it's allowed go for it and I at least appreciate that you've found a reasonable character from the stories to be represented by the profile, but it would be ugly facing both of these profiles in the same game.

Its from a while back and we've come up with our own army controls - one Epic from a set list of restricted heroes (I wouldn't restrict Theoden or Eowyn, for example. Eomer, yes.) per 1000 pts. So if they had applied in that game, it would have been Elphir OR Faramir OR Elessar.

At the time, the guy I played wasn't too happy with the idea of houserules but they were the first thing he mentioned when arranged a match with me last week. So you see, communication to the gaming group comes in a range of forms. :)

If you can't persuade them with logic thrash them with loop holes. 8) I liked many of your house rule suggestions in the other threads you've been active in. I have looked at a couple of them as potential keepers if we run a WotR event locally.

Looking at your two reports with this opponent it's amusing that you had Good vs Good and Evil vs Evil games. It would have been interesting to see how each would have played out against the opposite dynamic.
