hey folks, just recently bought a pack of Roman Legionaires after having a quick discussion with someone on the forums. Thank you again for the heads up on these (brilliant) models. I only recieved the models yesterday after waiting for postage things with may day/Royal Wedding etc.... .. Since I was rather excited I decided to start making a small Roman fort which would roughly have garrisoned 50-60 men.

Here shown is the dirt bank with the wooden planks across

This is where I am at the moment, and have only just added the doors which can open/close.

Thank's folk for the kind words. I've had a little time to work on it some more today. I started building the two barracks at both sides of the fort. I've run into a little problem though, for the roof I want to have those typical Roman tiles. The curved, orange roof tiles. I'm not sure how to achieve this look, but I thought of using the inside of a piece of cardboard. You know that corrigated piece to strengthen the box. This didn't work to well, unless there is a proper technique to do it? Anywhoo any suggestions would be helpful.

I'll get working on those Romans ASAP, was just using up my time to finish that fort (the Romans need somewhere to stay for the night) and then I'll get right onto the models. What's handy about the fort is it can be easily used for Rohan for it's a little like the Edoras style in wood etc...

Hi drumstick thus looks really good!

The gate Tower is perfect and the buildings look good too. For the roof I would suggest scouting out a hobby shop for textured plasticard. Otherwise depending on the time and location a timber built outpost may have a thatched roof, especially if its built by local auxiliaries.

You do realise that it's taking you longer to build a dinky little fort than the Romans to build an entire camp :P

Very nice fortification - have you ever visited Hadrian's Wall? Vindolanda is fantastic - they have recreated a tower and section of the wall. I am guessing the legionaries are from Warlord - they make some superb minis.

@Kruger_NZ: Good idea actually, that would probably be the easiest option. I'll have a look what my local hobby store has in ways of roofing/tiles.

@hithero: lol probably true, but if I had an army of Romans I'm sure I could finish it faster. :lol: How long would they normally take to put up one of these forts actually out of curiousity.

@Dorthonion: I've never actually visited it but I've always wanted to, I'm fasinated by the Romans. I'm sure those big Gondorian shields were loosely based on the Roman ones. Yep I bought a pack of legionaires after someone told me about them on this site, fantastic minatures!

I'll have an update soon, and I'll get some pictures of my work on the Roman models tonight. :)

Got 5 models done today, and had one that I did previously when I first got them. i decided to paint them on the sprue which was a new method of painting for me. It worked quite well, and I would give it another go. These minatures are actually a little smaller than 28mm so I found it more difficult to get detail, but then again they are only line troops. Also I always have trouble with the shield transfers, they're so fiddley! Anyone else had this problem? I bought a pack of 25mm square bases and they've worked a charm. What kind of basing should I go for? grass/rock terrain or wooden to represent the fort or something? Anyway I'll keep working on some more models and keep you up to date, here are the photo's:

When the romans were at war (invading) I believe they would make a fort every evening, I would guess it took them around 2-ish hours? :roll:

Hi Drumstick. Re: basing, I would suggest that whatever else you do, most armies just look much better mutli-based. I have even converted many of my WOTR troops over to this format. Then you can give them formations (I quite like some im wedges), line up proper linked-shieldwalls, and have more space to make the bases scenic. To me, the spacing you get with individually based figs only really looks right for warband types... who weren't necessarily the most neatly lined up.

Of course, then the problem becomes: what base size? Then the perennial ancients basing debate rolls on.

@Xelee: Okay will give that a go mate, cheers for the advice.

Update: I've had some time to work on the fort a little more, here's the progress. I have added wooden stakes which were just whittled down from a straight plank of balsa wood and then sharpened. (which I have already stabbed myself with, so it's either fighting back at me or the defenses really work)

Added a few other details as you can see with the large steps (with enough room for models to climb up) and a small ladder up to the wooden tower. Few strips were added to the door for more detail. I think I'm going to add another window to the larger building to the left.

Almost ready for painting now, although I'm thinking I might need to plaster the walls of the barracks to get sme texture. Looks awfully clean and smooth at the moment.

Anywhoo more updates to come, most likely not tomorrow for I have my Standard Grade bio exam :sad: Wish me luck

Looks great! But wouldnt the wooden stakes just make it eaiser to climb up? Still they look pretty sick!

Thank you, nice to see you around Aqan. It's in it's painting stages now, and yes I agree I need to engrave the wood more on the pannels. I'm going to have a tiled roof, but the red roman type. Will keep you update 8)
