I'm working on a set piece/diorama of the seat of seeing from Amon-Hen. I've created an eye of Sauron using the plastic ring included in the game boxed sets. The diorama is going to include an invisible frodo that I snagged for super cheap from ebay; and a self sculpted and created seat featuring the eagle sculpted seat modeled after the film.

Working on a mold of a well suited Eagle for the Seat and attempting to put the script around the ring with technical pen. Results to appear in subsequent posts.

Well I have cast all the pieces here is my step by step for the casting:

I use a 4 part product called Alumilite: First part is the silicon and its hardening Catalyst--you use 10 parts silicon for 1 part hardener:
Image

I then used this model as my piece that I want to cast (I believe it is an old Ral Partha Eagle). I like him because he has the seated pose--very close to the film eagles:
Image

After setting up and placing the pieces in the molding areas it looks like this:
Image

After it sets for about 12-24 hours you get your molds:
Image

You then use the Alumilite casting material (Acrylic) which is also two parts (1:1 ration of acrylic to hardener):
Image

You then cast the pieces using the molds. For the Chair I need 4 Eagles .. . the molding isn't perfect but since these are old ruins the imperfections work perfectly!:

Next up assembly and painting. I've highlighted and finished the Eye of Sauron. I will take pictures in sunlight today as the photos above do it no justice.

I tried and failed to sculpt a seeing seat. I cannot wait to see how yours turns out.

Will be putting some more hours in on the project tonight. Assembly and basing is on the agenda. Below is a better picture of the Eye of Sauron in sunlight. Been practicing the script still have to shrink it down a few more cms. before it will fit well. How do the flames look--does it look realistic?

Continued Assembly process:

Mounted Eagles:

Top View:

First Wings Mounted:

All Wings Mounted . . . but there's a problem:
Image

So I looked at this and it is close to the film version all Eagles have their wings up . . . but it doesn't make much sense to me as a seat. So I've taken some poetic liscense that will help with the logistics of the seat (after all FORM SHOULD FOLLOW FUNCTION . . . not the other way around).

This is what I came up with:
Image

Now rather than being at the corners the eagles are in front back and the two sides. The chair seat will go across with the back of the seat going up the back of the eagles wings. I also like the idea of the front birds wings in the soaring position as it metaphorically speaks to the purpose of the seat--i.e. seeing and being transported great distances. The Eye of Sauron will then be mounted with a magnet at the top of the chair and Invisible Frodo will be magnatised to the seat. What are your opinions of the divergence from the film version?

I would like to see the Frodo model for scale. I am very interested in seeing what you do with it.I say go for it. If you don't like it try again with more cast.

Scale Photo . . . plastic is the foundation for the seat.

Argh! I'm so torn which is holding me back on finishing. I found this great up close picture of the WETA Seat of Seeing; they use four seats (one between each of the eagles) instead of just one. However, the text leads me to believe that it is just one seat. I've been reading and trying to visualize what I want, but really can't decide. I might have to make two just as Old Man Willow suggested, but not sure I will have use for them even as display. I've attached the photo of the WETA below. Which vision would you all choose?

This is what I did.I used Hirst blocks for the seat and used clay to make the birds.
I used one seat also. You have an advantage with the mold. The detail is better and you can recast mistakes.
I would like to see how what you have started turns out. It will be different but that makes it better too.
If you want to make it more movie like, cut the tails off and trim the sides of the bird so that you can mount the wings higher.
You might even try two birds. I am also looking forward to some scenes from the Hobbit . You will be able to make more than enough birds.

This is one of the times that something looks better or good enough on the table. I am going to try again.

There are some more reference photos in this album and photos Of Amon Sul from Games Day in Spain I think. If you click on the thumbnail and go through the album you can see I got in a rush. There is a good photo of the Weta model too.

I might use this OOP figure as the base figure for the next one
