I started this stairway before I had the slab mold. I think I am going to paint it and see how it looks. I may put some more filler on it so that I can engrave more detail to match the steps.

You can see the slab mold wall will look much better. I am going to purchase a field stone slab mold as well. I don't plain to use the statues with this piece but they stand out well against the black. It is a cool piece and I thought you would like to see it.

The Gothic arrow slit and the Gothic slab mold I am going to use for Helms Deep. I use the field stone molds for the Shire. I am working on some new fire places and window and doors for hobbit houses using field stone molds.You can see how well they match the Dwarven Forge cast as well.

Nice stairs.

You've done quite a good job though the steps don't really look like they fit on the black blocks so some more filler would definitely be helpful.
Though you don't plan placing the statue with the stairs, and it would not fit if you are using it as part of goblin town, it would look kind of neat if you were to carve out a small alcove in the black blocks to put him in.

I'm looking forwards to the updates. Especially your Helm's Deep as it is always interesting to see the differences in how people make the same thing. Based on what I've seen so far yours will be another quite unique piece so I'm quite interested in seeing how it turns out. Good luck with all your different projects.

I am making some more progress on the modular pieces for Goblin Town. Many are going to be up grades for Moria and Dwarf Realms. I added thicker filler to the stair but I decided to leave the cast floor pieces off. The second photo is the back side of the stair with more accessories from my collection. The next photo is a figure from the late 70's from a late friends estate. I have cut out a two inch wide stair for the road pieces and some high wall pieces for back drops as well.


I am going to try to make at least two casts a day from the new molds but you can see it will take a wile to build up and inventory. I am working on cast rock faces as well. I am going to make a new back drop for my game table so I have a lot of rock cast to do. The third photo is a Styrofoam core mountain. I made it by filling the rock molds with plaster and letting the plaster set on the form. When the cast was dry I removed the mold from the form. It is hard to explain but easy to do. I will try to find a example of some one using this technique on u tube.

The stairs turned out quite well though a dwarf may have to roll on the jumping chart to climb each step by the looks of it.

I made the steps so that the figures would not fall off. They would look better if they were scale. Some of the older figures are much smaller. The dwarfs won't quite have to take a jump test. You can see how small old man Willow is.The other figure is a GW Saron from the 80's

I need to work on the mouth eyes and nails and highlight the weapon on the Moria troll. I have to fill and file some mold lines on the plastic troll. There is a bad one on the back I did not see until I dry brushed the first coat. The drums need a lot of work too. I will wait until I get my new glasses to finish the Trolls and some of the spiders. I think new glasses will help improve the photos as well.

I have been casting lots of parts. I will have some up dates on some of the big projects soon. A big pile of pile of cast blocks does not make a very interesting post. I have started gluing the stair case for a ruined tower. It makes a good stair case for a wine cellar. I think I will use field stone for the inn.The other photo includes a new piece for my road and a few pieces that will end up as components for other games. I am going to use the crypts for a Halloween game but they will look good in some of the ruins I am going to make with extra blocks.

Time for a major up grade.As I have been casting blocks for Helms Deep I have come to realize it is going to take a great while longer than I thought to build it this way. However, I am going to have all kinds of extra blocks for some smaller projects right away.First I am going to make an Amon Hen. I already have enough blocks for the seeing seat and some ruins. I am going to look at Amon Sul as well. I am going to try to match the style of the new plastic Osgiliath model. As I was looking through some of the movie art books I realized the set designers used some of the sets over and over. I am going to do that too.

While I was dry fitting some of the blocks I discovered I need a strait Gothic arch mold for Helms deep and Amon Hen. The curved arches will make some really cool ruins. If I can work out the buttresses may be Amon Sul.
I know this has been done before. So If any one has suggestions or tips I would love to hear from you.

I have made some progress on Amon Hen. I may be able to start gluing it together soon. I finally found a Saron's throne from the 1985 GW LOTR collection. I have no idea how to paint it.


I have also worked out some of the stone work for my Helms Deep. I am going to make a 24 inch wall like the plain in the Two Towers Journey book to start. I have some new molds that I think will work for arches and towers. I will start on the whole thing as soon as I have worked out the storage for it.



I have to wait for the glue to dry so that I can file out some of the detail in the arrow slits. I will also glue on a walk way surface. I was a few small bricks short. I still have to sand a few spots befor I glue down the top row. I have to cast one of the molds eight more times to have enough blocks for the 24 inch wall.I am not sure about the towers.I think the brick work looks Ok but It really doesn't match the GW design.

I do not know what the artist was thinking when he designed Saron's throne. Did I miss an obscure reference some where?I still like it but have no idea how I should paint it.

Well Mr Oldman Willow, am I the jealous one. I'd love to get my hands on some Hirst blocks and start on Helms Deep too - watching this one with a keen eye
As for the throne - no, I have no idea how to paint it or where the idea came from. My suggestion would be a very dark gloss - resembling the inside of Orthanc - like the throne had been moulded from the rock itself. The only thing with that is you may need to do the floor the same colour so that it melds into one another.

I saw a marbled effect on another site I was going to try on some stone work.
I also like the idea of something carved from stone.
I like the idea of army of the dead style ghost better than Warhammer Chaos daemons.
