I have to agree with you that it is too complicated to devise your own template, especially if you are new to the game. Good idea about having a One Ring Battle Company list, maybe it could go into the Magazine when that starts up officially? But i think that Erunion has made a great start with revised courage rules, we just maybe need to add caps on some rules and add some more in. I like the idea of "Generic" special rules that you can choose for your battle company at the start, like the berserker or something. We will need to analyse any home grown battle companies though.
Any how I think we could make it into a PDF file for people to access.

Great idea!!! Count me in!

We've the following house rule:

Spent 1 Influence dice to buy 1 healing potion.
No hero can have more then 2 and only 1 hero per company can have them.

At the end of the battle the player can choose to spent a healing potion if the result on the warrior injury table is Misses next game.
One can only do one attempt to use a potion per game.

To spent a potion roll a D6

1-2: The potion is not effective, warrior misses next battle
3-5: Slowly the wounds are healed, the warrior can fight, but suffers a -1 to its fight value
6: It's super effective, treat as full recovery

I should warn you: anything I say I'm going to do won't be done for a long time. I'm a little overcommited at the moment. I'll get there eventually, though.

what is the reason for allowing magic in the retreat? it just seems to me a bit inappropriate as magic users in bc are 'cowardly' shamans? just a thought i really can't wait for these new rules there looking good.

First: I've just read about it, and I really like the idea of updating the rules for Battle Companies. I have always loved the idea of an unknown hero that leads his small band of veterans through the wilderness, and unfortunately they've never perfectioned the rules. So I'd like to help a bit with that job.

Maybe it's an idea to add banners to the game, which you can purchase like other equipment at a specific amount of influence points?

And I thought about a Battle Company from Lothlorien, maybe something like this?
Galadhrim Warrior with bow -> promote -> Galadhrim Knight with bow
Galadhrim Warrior with Elven blade -> promote -> Galadhrim Knight with Elven Blade
Galadhrim warrior with spear and shield -> promote -> Guard of the Galadhrim Court

We play battle companies most of the time. I love this topic and al other topics about battle companies.
I've also found:
- http://battlecompanies3.weebly.com/

Mayby we can put our heads together and make rules/battle companies in the name of 'The One Ring'?

Alright so for anyone that has been following this thread - I'm working on the BC III project here. The goal is to have it finished by the 21st of June. I really like some of the input here and would like to see some more of it. If you're interested in my site its the weebly one above have a look.

One of the many questions I'm dealing with now is how to change the magic system in SBG so that spellcasters are worth it but not overpowered. at the moment both stormcallers and shamans have a max limit of 2 will. with only a 2/3 chance for the lowest spell thats not a lot of bang for your buck... the will system i am finding was designed for istari and nazgul and not really effective in this way.
So how about using a variation of the mastery system of WotR?

If you're really interested in the project and want to become a member of the BC III team message me. - we have a private forum for rules disscussion.
This project will be done in the name of both the One Ring & The Last Alliance.

Hey, guys. Great feedback. It's good to see you weren't idle in my absence.

Anyway, I've done a little more work on this. I've got a blog set up and I've got the basic rules uploaded, as well as Faction sheets for Dwarves and the Misty Mountains. Future goals are to finish faction sheets for all the other races, then start tackling supplemental equipment (such as banners, trolls, etc.) and finally create some scenarios. The eventual plan is to create a downloadable living rulebook.

You can check it out at the following link: Battle Companies

Hey, numenor. I took a look at the stuff you've put together and it seems like we've gone entirely different directions with the project. You seem to have steered more towards a tabletop RPG with the classes and stuff, whereas what I've been working on is basically a tweak of the old rules with provisions for new models and troop types in the promotion system and perhaps some new gaming/scenario material. I'll be happy to give my feedback on your project, as I hope you will do with mine. There's room enough for both types of gameplay!

hey erunion, good to see you back!

I realize my BC III project is a bit more in-depth. I'm very interested to see your progess hopefully, we can bounce ideas off each other!
I think if we could start a forum/site/area within the one-ring for members of the SBG community to submit new Battle Companies scenarios (much like the player-made Redux scenarios) it would benefit both our projects.

Just wondering if you have thought about developing a Battle Companies campaign system?

looking forward to seeing more,
numenor

I had. In fact, I have a complete set of the Mighty Empires hex tiles that I am just dying to use. I got them all ready for a campaign with my gaming group, but then I had to move for a job so we never got to play the campaign. I would definitely include something like that in the supplement.

hey again, in my mind this is the greatest form of SBG not only for its focus on each model but its ability to create storylines much like oringinal LotR scenarios... playing points battles is fun but LotR SBG shines in scenario game-play.

were you thinking map campaign (might empires?) - at the moment im struggling with how to combine a linked scenario (story arc) with map campaign to make it fully interactive...

Yes, we were planning on a map campaign. There was a hex-based campaign in the WD a couple of years back and we were going to use that as the basis of our Mighty Empires campaign.

Linked scenarios can be fun, too, and can be interesting even if it's not always BC vs. BC.

Also, I've got Rohan uploaded now.

Glad I can help, we will probably only be using the Rohan and Dunland BCs though.

PS: On your wordpress site, Google Docs won't let me access the Dwarf Battle company
