Hi guys,
I've just been thinking that, how come Gandalf managed to defeat the Balrog single handedly in Tolkien's world, when, in sbg, Gandalf has no chance of killing a Balrog on his own?

Thoughts?

How could we balance this out?

Hi LordElrond, White Dwarf issue 281 featured a mini game for SBG called 'Duel on Zirak-Zigil', it has rules in it that lets you have a balanced fight between Gandalf and the Balrog.

Yeah, as BizarreWarstar said, GW have always thrown in a special rules the gandalf can cast 'sorcerous blast' on the bridge to defeat the balrog and plummet them both to their doom.

The battle between Gandalf and the Balrog lasted very long.
Besides they fell a couple of miles down and the balrog's flames where doused.

Yeah, I guess so. I just wondered if gw had given special rules to gandalf for a specific scenario, which I now know that they have

I remember something like that yes, perhaps in the Shadow and Flame rulebook or a BGIME magazine.

Edit: not in the rulebook, but perhaps in a WD?
Just read the posts in the topic again, we allready have a WD number.

Gandalf also proclaims to the Balrog that he is the "Servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame or Anor. You can not pass. The Dark Fire will not avail you flame of Udun." then the balrogs flames diminished.

That being said, I have no doubt that Gandalf could weaken the Balrogs flames, and I think part of his plan after dousing his flame was to bring him to the top of the mountain to fight him in the frost and wind and light (more so than a cave at least), thereby robbing him of his greatest weapons of fire and shadow. Still an epic fight that saw Gandalf "die" but I think part of it was that he played his hand very well.
