do spears count as hand weapons?
for example:
the elf warrior profile says that elves are unarmed,
so if you include one with heavy armor, shield and a spear
would he count as unarmed?
so would I have to get an elven blade for him to be armed?

The elf warrior profile does not say the magic word "unarmed" it says he does not have any equipment. "Semantics" you say. "Term definition" says GW.  Only if the profile uses the exact term "unarmed" do they not have a hand weapon. This is explained in the FAQ. And of course a spear is a hand weapon...what else would it be? |

Hmmm We should make a sticky thread for this kind of questions. Like do wargs get a charge bonus and do elfs have hand weapons. |
