Hi guys (and gals, just incase!)

A long time ago, over 2 years now, i was heavily involved in the Painting and Gaming side to the LOTR SBG. However i lost my previous collection, with a hefty collection of rulebooks and exopansions, scenery, dice and all manner of gaming aids to my ex partners dustbin

Sooooo a few weeks back i thought to myself, right, time to get stuck back into my beloved LOTR collection... starting from scratch (as to be fair my collection was a bit all over the place).

So i have bought myself a box of plastic Morannon Orcs and whilst gradually painting them, i have been looking at the new additions to the hobby (WoTR and Battlehosts), i have seen both, but have a more understanding about Battlehosts.

My question is, what do i need now to get gaming again ? I dont need to buy the Core rulebook aswell as WoTR and Battlehosts ? Although i understand Battlehosts isnt neccessary. Will WoTR have the basic rules in aswell as the rules for the regiments ?

Lord of the Rings in now split into two completely different systems, the only thing they share is the models.

The SBG is the original skirmish style game.

WotR is a new unit based game, models are grouped into companies of 8 models and then formations made up of multiple companies.

It might be worth trying a game of WotR in a local GW store to decide if you'd rather stay with the SBG or move to WotR. Of course there is no reason you can't play both. Battlehosts is an expansion for WotR and not for the SBG.[/b]

Ah ok cool, tbh i prefer the unit based system like Warhammer, just never really liked Warhammer all that much.

As for the core rules, is that included in WoTR rulebook or do i have to buy the other rulebook ?

Yes if you want to play WotR all of the core rules and the army lists are included in the main book.

Yes, everything you need for WOTR is in the WOTR book, Battlehosts is just an extra. I would also warn you that WOTR requires a substantial investment, much more than SBG once you get to the upper levels of points, so be prepared to spend maybe quite a bit more than you previously did with when you played SBG.

Well i must admit, i started my SBG collection from the 1st book or so and as more and more came out with new miniatures and rulebooks to collect, i can only imagine that starting from a new, it wont cost quite as much, especially if i buy both books (WOTR and Battlehosts), purely because in my previous, now lost, collection i had return of the king rulebook, Mines of Moria rulebook, Gondor in flames (?i think) and anotehr one.... i forget now :S. That was alot of money spent!

I think starting a-new, if i get the next 2 rulebooks and examine what is within im rech, i can plan my army alot better.

My last collection i had all sorts of miniatures who didnt see a game purely because i was learning all the time and new rules and miniatures were coming out all the time. I know thats Games Workshop in general, but having had a little look at the latest stuff im kinda guessing they "At the Core" as i would say, in terms of rules and gaming.

Both systems are great, but WotR requires more cash input than SBG my 2000 point Misty Mountains army has cost me (it started as a small SBG army a few years ago) in total (approx) £162, granted this includes the price of a Dragon and the WotR rulebook it's self. Soon it will be £182 when I buy two Wild Warg sprues. And their is the cost of buying/making movement trays. Of course the main advantage of WotR over SBG is that the WotR book is the only rulebook you need to buy.

You can buy a cheap SBG 500 point Mordor army for not that much money.

That's my opinion anyway, like I said, I like both systems so it depends on which system you prefer.
