rules state that no two ambushing formations from same side can be secretly assigned to same terrain feature, but what if both opponents assigned one of their ambushers in the same terrain?

we simply play it that who reveals first occupies the terrain (if already empty), and his opponent can still be hidden there and follows the normal reavealing rules later on when he decides to do so.

is this the right way to play it?

Just follow the third paragraph of the Ambush rule concerning occupied terrain or wait until it's unoccupied.
