Sorry probably been asked many times before

does anyone have a definitive answer on when the +1D is calculated ?

considering the order in duels is strikes are made after models move back an inch, seems a shame they would likely lose the bonus from being pushed back ?

The bonus is calculated after the models back away.

The trick is to make sure the warriors back up so as to still touch two other models. This isn't to hard in a tight formation, but it does fall apart as the battle goes on and models get out of position. Which is sort of the point I suppose.
