I'm new to the game and was wondering what the difference was between War of the Ring and LOTR SBG :legolas:

Welcome to the forum and the game :) . SBG is on a skirmish scale and each model acts individually. WoTR is on a much larger scale and the models are organized in companies and formations. Each system has its own rules. As you can imagine, WoTR is the more expensive of the two due to the larger number of models required.

Both are fine systems. If I had a second army I would play WoTR, alas, I don't.

In my opinion, WOTR is better.

If I would like to discribe the difference between the two system:
- If you want to play the adventures of the Fellowship, you play SBG.
- If you loved the epic feeling of the Battle of Pelenor, you play WOTR.

I also played both game. SBG is great. You could create a nice terrain with a lot of element and you control everyone individually. But there is a limit. If you play with 40-50 characters, it's ok, but if you play with more, it's getting hard to look trough the field. It is also a lot of energy, to make a good move with everyone.

In WOTR, there are usually 5-6 formations, and that is all, you have to watch. You still use heroes abilities, and formation abilities.

BTW, if you ever start this hobby, you will collect more and more figures. Once you will realize, that you have enough figure to play a great WOTR game also. Many SBG players think that if you can't move everyone separately, it must be a boring game. But it is not. You became a great leader, and you have to use a great tactic to defeat the enemy.

The good thing is, you can play both game with your figures.

Here is two of my links:

These are my SBG adventures from the time, while I was in Belgium:

An this is my Hungarian topic, where I always post pictures from our great events, where we usually play WOTR:

If you want a very fun system that doesn't require you to buy boat loads of models, go with SBG. If money is no obstacle, go with WotR.

I wouldn't say it's about money, it's about the game aesthetic. Money is not much of an obstacle for me, I have lots of models and I'll never play WotR. If I liked tray games, I'd have been playing Warhammer long ago, but I find them abstract and boring. I prefer the SBG style of play, plus the building and using lots of terrain both for the eye-candy and the tactical challenge. Terrain is necessarily limited with WotR.

So pick the system that gives you the style of play that appeals to you most.

If you want a lot of model, you can get it as used stuff from ebay. Most of my collection is used.

Well, for me it's money. I've got good sized SBG armies in several different factions, but the largest WotR army I can get with them can barely break 1000 pts.

I also don't use ebay.

WoTR is really only better tan SBG at higher pts: 1,500-3,000 in my opinion, that is what it was made for. SBG is better at playing small scale battles obviously.

Of course both are different play styles, and both of them seem to be more Warhammery these days.

I disagree, we usually play from 700-1500 points, and it is great. The biggest battles I could image is 2000, but not more. It is true, that the rulebook suggest 3000-4000 points army, but we all know why.
If you have an 1000 points army, that is absolutely ok, you can have fun. If you use some more heroes, monster or special formations, you can get easily 1500 points.

Just check my WOTR topic, and see the points. We all have a great time from about 1000 points!

I've seen yours, and commented from time to time. Your lot is the exception - noramlly 1,000pts is really overcompetitive and overcheesy, but it's more balanced at higher pts. AndI think it looks a lot better with huge armies. The sight of a huge army never fail sto excite me, even if I don't like the army.

When I was new, I was thinking the same. But I realized very soon that it is boring after a while. I suggest to play both game, an 1000 points WOTR still good.

Not everyone finds SBG boring.

It's only boring if you have something along the lines of 100+ minis to move, which only happens if you play Moria without the Balrog (until about 1500 pts).

It was hard to play with 60-70 orcs too!

That's what trolls are for. Besides, SBG is designed for smaller armies, especially now with Warbands. @ElfLover, start with SBG, play a few games and decide if you like it. If you do like it, stick with it but give WotR a try once you have enough minis. If you don't like SBG, then go ahead and try WotR.

Of the things to keep in mind is how popular a game system is in your area. WOTR isn't as popular of a game so depending on where you live you might have a hard time getting a game together. If you want a large scale game that is balanced and has a larger following then I would suggest trying out WF in the future. For now, start collecting and play SBG, you can always upgrade to WOTR in the future.

But Warhammer is a) not a LotR game, so doesn't have the theme etc. and very importantly, the models (because you have to buy special Warhammer models, and because most of those are completely different in style to LotR, so you may not like them) that SBG and WOTR use.
b) according to many, not as much fun and even more unbalanced then WotR.
