Post subject:  Times of old.

Greetings.

I'm a huge Lord of the rings fan and I have been playing with the thought
of starting a forces of good army, but with a twist. I don't want to use the characters
from the third age. I want my army to be older. Yet I hate the miniatures of Númenor
from the last alliance. Any ideas? I dont want to take the easy road and just go with
Elves or Dwarfs. I would like the army to be mainly humans, could have som elven allies.
When did the Warriors of Minas Tirith start wearing the armour the miniatures have now?
And do you think that it is a bad Idea since the people I'm gonna fight might have armies
from the third age?

Kind regards, Gharnukk

Lots of people played LOTR before the movies came out.

I'm thinking of an Númenor/Gondor army. What happened after the fall of Sauron and Isildur's death?

Arnor? You could build around Arvedui/Malbeth.

After the fall of Sauron and Isildur's death, the one survivor of the Battle of the Gladden Fields made his way with the Shards of Narsil. To make a long story a bit shorter, the Necromancer moved into Dol Guldur about 100 years after this event, and some years after the Gladden Fields Minas Ithil fell and became Minas Morgul, which is when (give or take a little) Minas Anor became Minas Tirith (I'm pretty sure I have the names right). In the south, there was great fighting through all of Ithilien, during the time of the great plague, the assault of the wainriders (easterlings in wagons), and the Kinstrife, wherein Castamir took the throne from the current king, Eldacar, who was only half-Numenorean. Castamir took over Umbar (resulting in its becoming the city of the Corsairs) when he was driven from Gondor when Eldacar returned, defeating him in battle at Osgiliath, at which time the Palantír was lost.

In the North, the descendants of Anarion (Elendil's other son) were ruling the realm of Arnor. The Witch-King arrived and began to build the realm of Angmar, slowly but surely shattering the power of Arnor until Arvedui, the last king, had to flee into the north. He vanished from history when an elven ship sent by Cirdan to pick him up failed to return home, as it was winter.

The last king of Gondor, whose name escapes me at the moment, built a great fleet and sailed north to challenge the realm of Angmar. His army met the Witch-King in battle outside of Fornost, for the Witch-King would not await his onset. The Angmarian forces were routed, utterly, and while the Witch-King attempted to flee back to Angmar with what remained of his army, an elven host led by Glorfindel swept out of Imladris, while the cavalry of the Gondorians (which had not participated in the previous engagement) caught up with the Witch-King. The evil forces were annihilated, while the Witch-King personally faced the king, whose horse fled, bearing him away unwillingly. However, Glorfindel caused the wraith to flee back to Mordor.

The descendants of Anarion became the Rangers of the North, while the King returned to MInas Tirith. He was later challenged by the Witch-King to single combat outside of Minas Morgul. Foolishly he accepted and was trapped and died. Thus began the reign of the stewards.

Hope that helps.

@gharnukk: arnor was broke into three, it later fell to the witch king, gondor's royal line failed and it passed in to the hands of the stewards, kazad-dum was destoryed by balrog and the gobs, dol- gundur (fall of green wood the great), elves began to leave, rohan came to beinging, segol became gollum and hobbits moved form gadden to the shire (around time arnor slit), smaug, end of dale and ereabor,

Thanks for the Info Valamir :) Great stuff.
The problem I'm having with Arnor is that everything is in blister packs.

Actually, there were three survivors, Minas Ithil fell in the year 2001, after Arnor was destroyed, and Umbar was founded before Minas Morgul was founded.
Anarion's descendants ruled in Gondor, Isildur's heirs (thus Aragorn's title) ruled Arnor, and as I said, all of this happened before Minas Morgul was created. He also had 2 Palantir with him when his ship disappeared.
The last king of Gondor, whose name escapes me at the moment, built a great fleet and sailed north to challenge the realm of Angmar. His army met the Witch-King in battle outside of Fornost, for the Witch-King would not await his onset. Earnur wasn't King in Gondor at the time that he went north to help Arnor.
The descendants of Anarion became the Rangers of the North, while the King returned to MInas Tirith. He was later challenged by the Witch-King to single combat outside of Minas Morgul. Foolishly he accepted and was trapped and died. Thus began the reign of the stewards.
Again, it's Isildur's heirs who lived in Arnor.
Hope that helps.

Other than that, you are correct.

Yeah, that is a pain. Personally, I'd love an Arnor army; I think it would be very competitive. But, like you implied, it's too expensive. :(

Post subject:  Re: Times of old.

Yeah, expensive. And then too little variety. Spearmen and rangers...

And hobbits, don't forget the hobbits.

@Drauglin- my thanks for the corrections- I didn't have my Tale of Years handy and didn't want to hunt it down online.

Do people really use Hobbits in Arnor armies?

If you're doing the Battle of Fornost theme, of course!

Post subject:  Re: Times of old.

Some minor conversion work on some WoMT would make suitable Warriors of Arnor. Of course, with a Battle of Fornost theme you could have a small contingent of Arnorians backed up by Gondorians and Elves.

No Hobbits are mentioned in this article http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_Fornost
But it does sound like a lot of fun :)

Yes it does, it says tje Shore reckon they sent several companies of archers to fight at Fornost, read it again.

Also, more people put Hobbits and Warriors an an Arnor army than Rangers and Warriors.

Ah yes, my bad. I just didn't think so because there was no Hobbits mentioned in the box to the right. Would be fun to try it out.

Bought some Warriors of Arnor, Arnor Command, Hobbit bowmen and Arvedui and Malbeth today.
Also picked up Elendil, will try to use him as a base for Eärnur http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/E%C3%A4rnur
Really excited about this project. Later on I will pick up some Last alliance boxes and Glorfindel.

Very nice. Arvedui is such a useful fellow for such a theme. Any idea how you are planning on painting them?
