Post subject:  LOTR SBG Resource List

THIS IS THE NEW UPDATED STRATEGY BATTLE GAME RESOURCE LIST!

I will update this whenever it needs updating

Getting started with the Lord of the Rings

If you want to get started with LOTR you will need several things;

  • Some LOTR miniatures
  • The rules
  • An opponent
  • And of course some free time and imagination
  • Gaming tools such as dice and a tape measure

When getting started there are several things you should take into account;

1) The Mines of Moria starter set.

This excellent boxed set will provide you with all the gaming rules required to play the game, an introduction set of scenarios to get familiar with the rules and quite a lot of nice minis and scenery pieces including the full Fellowship and a Cave Troll! So you basically get everything you need to start gaming straight out of the box. However the rulebook included in this boxed set is only a smaller version of the main rulebook and is missing a couple of profiles and some of the advanced rules (seeing as it’s aimed at beginners). To gain access to these advanced rules and extra profiles you will need to acquire the main rulebook (see below).

2) The main rulebook, The One Rulebook to Rule them All.

This rulebook gives you a full-colour sourcebook with all the info you'll need to play standard games and scenarios, modeling and painting tips and the profiles of all the models from previous editions of the game and supplements. This includes the missing special rules and profiles from the Mines of Moria beginners’ rulebook however it is missing the Army of the Dead profiles.

It is also vital to realize that the main rulebook only includes profiles for models up until the moment it was released, so any models and rules released after that will require you to get whatever supplement they are in.

3) What models to start with?

There are several things to keep in mind when getting models to start you of. First off, it is advisable to start with buying a plastic boxed set of core troops, this is because it will give you a decent amount of plastic, and thus convertible models. It also gives you a good starting force to base the rest of your army from.

It might also be worth starting off with a Character in your army, named or unnamed, either is a good start. If you’re starting Orcs go for an Orc Captain or a Ringwraith, if Gondor you could go for a Captain of Minas Tirith or maybe even Boromir. Getting a Character adds some muscle to your force, always handy.

4) Which models need an additional supplement to acquire their profiles?

Now onto selecting actual models, below you can find a list of plastic kits and pewter models that will require you to buy an extra supplement to get their rules and profiles. All (unless seriously mistaken) other models can be used directly in combination with the main rulebook.

5) Great, that is a lot of stuff I can't use right away. But what can I use?
I will not give a complete lists of models, since I want to keep this readable. But everything else is directly useable, but below I'll give a few examples of the things you can expect to find in each of the sections of the main rulebook.

  • The Shire - Hobbits aswell as Sharkey and his minions.
  • Arnor & Angmar - Rangers of the North, barrow-wights and wargs. The Elven Havens - Elrond, Gil-galad and Elven Warriors.

  • The Dwarf Holds - Dwarven kings and warriors.
  • A Shadow in the East - Easterlings.
  • Harad - Suladan, the haradrim and the mighty Mumakil.

6) So what’s up with all those other books?
The other books are supplements or sourcebooks that were released after the main rulebook. They are simply expansions to the game which each go into detail about a different region or era of the war of the Ring.

The Fellowship of The Ring
A journeybook that follows the adventures of the fellowship from the first book/movie, accompanied by related scenarios and painting and modelling sections.

The Two Towers
A journeybook that delves into the events surrounding the second LOTR book/movie including the grand siege of Helms Deep.

The Return of the King
A journeybook that goes into the events surrounding the third LOTR book/movie including the Clutches of Shelob and the siege of Minas Tirith.

A Shadow in the East
A supplement which provides profiles and info on the Easterlings, the Khandish Mercenaries and their roll in the history of Rohan.

Fall of the Necromancer
This supplement deals with Sauron's first resurrection after his demise at the hands of Isildur. As his body is starting to take shape once more in the forests surrounding Dol Guldur, the Wood Elves and their allies need to fight for their survival in an attempt to dispell this evil once more.

The Ruin of Arnor
This supplement delves into the rise of the Witch-King after the fall of Sauron at the hands of Isildur, and his attempts to destroy the bastion of good that once was Arnor.

Khazad-Dum
This supplement gives profiles from the noble king Durin and the stoic Dwarves of his household, to the vicious Moria Goblins and the terrifying Dragon.

Gondor in Flames
This supplement delves into the the kingdom of Gondor, scion of Numenor and tireless protector of Middle-earth.

Harad
This Sourcebook is an invaluable guide to collecting, modelling and gaming with the cruel men of Harad from the Far South of Harad, to the barbaric Corsairs of Umbar.

Mordor
This sourcebook contains all of the rules and information you need to field a force from Mordor; as well as detailed background information and valuable hobby advice.

Post Mordor Supplement
Any miniatures released after the Mordor Supplement were released for War of the Ring and thier SBG profiles can only be found in certain copies of White Dwarf (if you have any details of any ones I have missed from my list above, please let me know).

Legions of Middle-Earth
This book provides you with over 40 themed army lists to recreate forces from certain areas, battles or time periodes. An added bonus is that this book also has a lott of entries in it about models that have yet to been released. Things like elven knights, Umbar corsair, fiefdom warriors, the Woses, Dunland warriors, the werewolf, the black-hearted tree and monsters like dragons, cave drakes and stone giants. Check out page 57 for a Woses picture and page 94 for a picture of the Umbar corsairs.

This is not all of the sourcebooks there is however it seems pointless to go into any detail about the others such as Shadow and Flame and Siege of Gondor because everything about them is included in the Main Rulebook, however you may still find it helpful to purchase them if you are into collecting scenarios, modeling and painting guides etc.

Battle Companies

Haven't you got the time for a huge army or do you want a change from 'regular' LOTR? Then battle companies should be for you, a variant of the LOTR-system where you lead a (relatively) small band of warriors and heroes in an experience driven series of games.

During these games your band of warriors will gain influence points that can be spent in various ways such as increasing the characteristics of your heroes, buying equipment, recruiting new warriors and for upgrading current war band members.

Warbands

In Battle Companies there are several different warbands available for use. The core warbands can be found in the Battle Companies Rules above but here are some fan made Battle Companies Rules mainly updated versions by Erunion.

Must've misread unfortunately, what I've said states that the MoM rulebook does have rules for the army of the dead whereas the Main rulebook does not :) No problems though. Thanks Jonathan!

Cheers guys!

It's came to my attention that the first two Battle Company links (which linked to the OZ version of the site as the UK and US links were gone) have now also broken due to the new OZ GW site so I'm sorry for any inconvenience here and I'll work on finding them again.
