I am a LOTR fan and have been interested in the SBG ever since seeing the 1st expansion sets "Fellowship of the Ring Battle Games in the World of Middle Earth" and "The Fellowship of the Ring" Box set.

Now after all these years I think I want to take the plunge and purchase a box set. I wanted to go with MoM set, but I cannot find a decent price on one.

Do any of you have any suggestions on where to start?

Welcome to the forum, and the hobby!

I would suggest purchasing the newest introductory box-set "Escape from Goblin Town". MoM does not contain the updated rules and think it has been discontinued by now.

You won't go wrong buying the latest "Goblin Town" box set, the latest rules, excellent figures, loads of them and scenery.

Find out where your nearest opponent/GW store is! That way you will actually be able to play ;)

I really wanted to get started with the lotr and it seemed like the MoM set would have been a good start because of the complete fellowship of 9 characters + all the goblins and troll. If I had to I could just buy the original fellowship box that just comes with the 9 characters and separately purchase goblins with a troll?

Yes I will probably end up purchasing EfGT, but I really wanted to get started with the MoM set for the goblins troll and the fellowship characters. I guess if I want to go that route I would have to purchase the fellowship box set and then a goblin set without a troll?

I want to start playing LoTR SBG, but I am confused about where to start. I have read several comments that MoM is a good place to start, but hard to find. I have looked at Escape from Goblin Town, but it doesn't look as interesting. What are the pros and cons of each set? If I want to start with MoM, where is the best place to look for it? Used is ok.

If you aren't going to build a moria or goblin-town army, and don't plan to use the character models, then IMHO both sets are a waste of money. In some ways MoM has better value, because at least the terrain is more generic, and the rulebook has some profiles and points related to the game as a whole. EfGt has profiles only for the included figures, but no others.

If you just want to try the game to see if you like it, buy either set for as cheap as possible from eBay, but lean towards MoM because at least the included profiles are more generic. If you already know you're going to enjoy this game, bite the bullet and spring for the main Hobbit rules, the sourcebook(s) for the army(ies) you want, and the models you want. Otherwise I guarantee you'll look back on your MoM/EfGt sets as a total waste (unless those models are the core of your army).

Greetings, and welcome to the One Ring!

Whafrog has given you some good advice, so that should help you get started. Happy hunting!
