@Dorth, the big black and yellow thing is just a power cable wrapped around a plastic frame. My wife was doing some hedge trimming last week and manage to cut through the cable! Thankfully the 'safety switch' cut out and she didn't get a shock.

@Beowulf, the minis have been produced for years actually but fans (notably abbcampbell) have been pestering the company for a game to use them with. So earlier this year they started developing the game and began playtesting in earnest. The game is almost finished and playtesting has gone quiet now that most of the rules have been sorted - it's just a case of fine tuning the various unit strengths and special rules. So I expect the game to be publicly available early next year.

And from what I understand (and I might be wrong) they'll be available as a low-cost (or free) downloadable PDF.

Time for an update. The bridge is slowly coming together with the two main supports constructed (but in need of detailing) and the basic design of the arch span done. I've also made the balustrade as well - this and one or two other components are almost ready for casting.

Image

The odd shaped model at the base is a hochrad - a pedal powered armoured vehicle invented by the Prussians during the 19th century.

As always, your terrain is stunning at worst and god-like at it's best! I love the detail on the handrailings for the bridge!

The Christmas holidays have given me enough time to get a bit further with this project. The three boards (600mm x 1200mm) have been built and I've made some moulds for certain components that will be repeated on the board (steps, pillars, balustrades) using a really cool moulding compound called Maximould.

Here's a shot of the bridge sections pinned together while I work out the rest of the table's layout:

Image

The steps will actually sit three inches above the board (which is water level) and will lead down to a walkway along the embankment, with another set of steps on the other side of the bridge.

I'll do some more over the next few days and will hopefully have some more interesting photos by the end of the week.

Very Nice! I can see this has the potential to be a brilliant board, although something makes me feel like there needs to be a huge tower near the steps for the bridge. I dont know why, I just thing it would look amazing. Of course I have no idea what your layout will be, so consider that my advice, have a tower! :D

Look on page 1 Kalek for Dagorlads layout drawing.

This is coming along very nicely. The steps look detailed already! Are they moulds?

LOL a big tower with a huge clock in it would be perfect. But I don't have an extra 6 months to build this, so I might just settle for a cardboard cut out and call it Big Bob.

@Radagast, the steps were made from a mould I cast myself. I have made another couple of moulds too and will be casting more pieces over the coming few days.

Narrow the bridge down slightly and you have something like the bridges in Osgiliath before they were ruined...

Heheh, yes the little steps look so lonely there on their own. It is the master for another mould I'll make soon, just need to finish off the stonework on it first.

Dorth, that's a good idea - swap out the Victorian buildings and gaslamps with some Gondorian-style architecture.

I was waiting (silently impatient  ) for an update on this project, and its looking great, no doubt will be an awsome board(s).

Will you be considering making an article on the casting process at some point?

Have you decided how to tackle the water yet?
I agree with Valdo, more please! :D

The water will be a thin layer of resin over a painted base. It's supposed to represent a very polluted river (the Thames during the 19th Century, although the Anduin choked with wreckage and detritus would be in the same state probably), so I'll paint it a pale green/brown colour.

There will be two sewer outlets in the embankment with their own brand of unpleasantness flowing into it as well. That'll be done as a waterfall effect (well, not exactly water as such, but you get the idea).

I had a good session on this yesterday and have an update for you. Currently the pieces are just resting in place (no glue yet), but you can start to see how the whole thing is going to look from these photos.

The hansom cab is from Eureka Miniatures and is a wonderful little model - so characterful and perfect for this setting.

marvellous!

seeing just this scene as it is now I was thinking how a diorama would look like when you don't complete it and don't paint it full but just focus on the important area and let the surrounding gradually 'fade'. (like on good artitsts' drawings, look on your first drawing in this thread)
