Hi all,

Brainstorming Mirkwood lists at the minute for an upcoming tourney. So far Ive come up with the below, albeit I stole most of it from Damian O'Byrne, any thoughts?

Cheers!

4 Palace Guard with Shield;
4 Palace Guard with Spear; Shield;

Hey! Totally my favorite army list, although, especially with the new changes I like old WE better to play but regardless.

This is what I liked at 600

Warband 1 10/12
Thranduil, King of the Woodland Realm with Horse;
4 Mirkwood ElvesElf bow;
3 Mirkwood Elves with Shield;
1 Mirkwood Elves with Shield; Elven glaive;
2 Mirkwood Cavalry
----
Warband 2 9/12
Tauriel
1 Mirkwood Ranger
4 Mirkwood ElvesElf bow;
4 Mirkwood Elves with Shield;
----
Warband 3 8/12
Legolas
1 Mirkwood Ranger
4 Mirkwood ElvesElf bow;
2 Mirkwood Elves with Shield;
1 Mirkwood Elves

So that's paying for the horse before the changes so drop an elf somewhere for the elk probably, it's pretty good, although you'll always be short on numbers. Oh, and I guess all the elves cost one point more now too.. That's why I don't like this army list as much anymore lol. I think you want to try to go for 3 warbands though, because you're basically going to need to soften them with shooting them have Thranduil and Tauriel kill everything while legolas picks off some softies.

You sure that's 600? Just put it all into the LK army builder and its more like 800!lol

I'll take a look at it but it seems near impossible to get 3 good strength warbands in at 600pts with going pure mirkwood warriors and I only have 18 of em!

What tactics do you use with your list?

I have both of your lists at 650, so they're pretty much the same points wise. I'm very torn. I'd be rather afraid of how small your list is.

Polywags list gets a few more models in, which i like, and he has more bows, which I feel like you should want with a Mirkwood force. And Tauriel is a combat beast (she's a prime example of power creep IMO, but that's a topic for elsewhere).

But I like that you have a banner, as it maximizes the Elves ability to win fights, which is critical with your small numbers. I think both forces will not be very forgiving. In that, they need to be played well, with a lot of precision, and mistakes will be magnified, given your small numbers. You'll need to use bowfire effectively, but you probably can't rely on it to win the day for you. You'll need to position troops well, so as not to be overwhelmed by forces with superior numbers. But if you can do that, you will win fights, and you have very strong heroes to carve through enemies.

I think both forces will do reasonably well against smaller, elite-type, hero heavy, or spell caster forces, but are likely to struggle against hordes.

That being said - play it and try it out. Should be fun!

Yeah 650 sounds right, I LK that before There and Back again which added a couple extra point per model.

I agree a banner would be great but its so hard to get your numbers up with elves especially the new mirkwood since they're sooo expensive. I've done some lists where I took a Mirkwood ranger captain instead of Tauriel to save some points and add a couple more elves in, and still have him chop up quite a few enemy models. You could try that to shave off a few points. Also I think you can't take more then one equipment options in the new rules. It's a cool list but it mostly comes down to hoping Thranduil and Tauriel can kill most of your opponents army, while Legolas snipes key targets and your troops try to hold the lines and not all die before your heroes kill everything.

I think it depends against hordes. If its Gondor with D6 that will have a hard time shooting them or even Morannon orcs is tough but anything if D5 you can pin cushion them pretty well. I definitely don't think it's the best army but I bet you have a shot against most things. I actually think monsters are one of the hardest things to deal with as they often come with a handful of other hordish troops which gets tough.

Holy Devlan Mud yeah, Thranduil is more expensive now too. I think the new book shafted the halls pretty hard.

Warband 1 8/12
Thranduil, King of the Woodland Realm with Elk; Elf bow;
4 Mirkwood Elf with Elf bow;
4 Mirkwood Elf with Shield; Elven blade;

Warband 2 11/12
Legolas, Prince of Mirkwood with Elven Cloak;
1 Mirkwood Ranger
4 Mirkwood Elf with Elf bow;
2 Mirkwood Elf with Elven glaive;
4 Mirkwood Elf with Shield; Elven blade;

Warband 3 4/12
Mirkwood Ranger Captain
2 Mirkwood Elf with Elven glaive;
2 Mirkwood Elf with Shield; Elven blade;

I dled the new LK army builder and worked out this list at 600. 601 actually, so there's some tweaking to the equipment to get it set but I think this is ok? I think part of my problem with Thranduil's halls without the old Thranduil profile is that the King of the woodland realm profile wants to dive in and smash especially with the elk but the whole rest of the army wants to kite back and thin the ranks then hold out till out can break the enemy. I kinda feel like it might be worth doing like an all in Thranduil's halls where you take the King Tauriel Palace guard captain, a banner, more cav less bows and maybe a few guards and just run in and try to out battle. It's very unwood elfy but maybe where the leads would actually be better?

I guess the other option would be to not take Thranduil, especially at 600 points he's a big chunk of your army and he feels kind of opposed to what the rest of your troops are good at.

Maybe something like this?

Warband 1 9/12
Legolas, Prince of Mirkwood with Elven Cloak;
1 Mirkwood Ranger
4 Mirkwood Elf with Elf bow;
4 Mirkwood Elf with Shield; Elven blade;

Warband 2 11/12
Tauriel with Elf bow;
1 Mirkwood Ranger
4 Mirkwood Elf with Elf bow;
2 Mirkwood Elf with Elven glaive;
4 Mirkwood Elf with Shield; Elven blade;

Warband 3 9/12
Mirkwood Ranger Captain
1 Mirkwood Ranger
2 Mirkwood Elf with Elf bow;
2 Mirkwood Elf with Elven glaive;
4 Mirkwood Elf with Shield; Elven blade;

This list feels a lot better to me honestly. 32 models, three pretty great heroes, 13 bows plus Tauriel, the cap and Legolas.

Warband 2 12/12
Tauriel with Elf bow;
2 Mirkwood Ranger
1 Palace Guard with Spear; Shield;
4 Mirkwood Elf with Elf bow;
2 Mirkwood Elf with Elven glaive;

I'd say it has got the potential do to pretty well. The archers are going to do better if you need them to go into close combat than rangers and they'll do better in the open field too. Tauriel and the glaives can compensate for the limited number dedicated fighters pretty well meaning you wont have to press the archers into combat at the onset. Thranduil and the knights are a big investment in shock and maneuverability. They do seem like the weakest link with their low defense horses being a prime target for bow fire or strength 4 troops. I don't know that it is really that big of a deal, and I like the mobility to complement the small army size, but it is something I would try to exploit if I went against this army.

Something I have been toying with at 600 points is:

Legolas with orcist,eleven cloak
Tauriel with bow
8 mirkwood warriors with shield
8 mirkwood warriors with Glaive
8 mirkwood warriors with bow

Galadriel Lady of Light

599 points

Not the most practical for collecting, but I feel like it could be very strong on the field. Galadriel gives you all the protection you need from magic which ensures Tauriel can do her thing, not to mention the blinding light effect which should garantee you the shooting war.

So basically the elves hold the line while your two combat heroes munch down the enemy army. The biggest problem for it is big heroes/monsters (Legolas with Orcrist should help negate this) so they would be a primary archery target.

That's interesting. I feel like I would be more likely to take caster Galadriel or Gandalf or Saruman to just immobilize whatever big nasty they have and let the elves shield while Tauriel kills everything. I feel like if they sit back and try to shoot with you you should win anyways. If you took Gandalf you'd get blinding light there too. I guess he's more expensive maybe that's where you could put the orcrist points.
I'd also probably drop orcrist off Legolas. It just seems really underwhelming to me.
At 500-600ish points I think you definitely wanna go Tauriel and Legolas and I would lean towards just taking lots more elves but the caster is never bad, just wonder if you'd have enough troops.
