I never played Gondor a lot but I've thought over this many times and I'm going to put together an army soon for a friend and myself.

Who do you guys prefer to use in your back line/archery units?

Citadel Guard or Rangers?

The attributes or advantages are clearly defined...

Rangers:
Shoot value better
Can possibly work in the woods
Cheaper cost
Guard:
Better armor
Stronger how
Special rule

And of course we can mix and match but which do you actually PREFER?
Please explain why.

Some extra advantages for me are:

Rangers ----> can take spear and they can take position as a F4 support line.
Citadel archers ----> can kill those creeping nazguls. I looooooove it so much when the noob mordor player grabs a solid mordor "fel beast-shade-troll chief-kardush" list and he find his bat rider dead in the first turns.

I can't both for me both units are necessary. Maybe citadel are not that much, because you almost cannot not include rangers in a MT list.

Both are great in there best situation.

Ranger- ranged vs even D models, combat vs odd S models.

Citadel guard- ranged vs odd D model, combat vs even S models.

Once I had a game with WOMT with bows against Isengard Uruk-hai, and may bows had nearly no effect even when my warriors hit. At a later battle of a similar constellation I tried a bolt thrower against Isengard Uruk-hai with troll and luckily hit and wounded the troll.

In other games my Gondorian bolt thrower was quite useless.

But if there are enough points in an army it could be another possibility for missile troops to use an additional bolt thrower against monsters with high defense.

I really like rangers, but I think they do better for Arnor (100% bowlimit? Yes please). Citadel guard are nice though. give them a spear and a long bow and stack them behind a WOMT shield-wall. FOR GONDOR!

I ran 20+ rangers, damrod and Madril who killed 11 Mirkwood archers, in a single turn. :)

Rangers. Easterlings, Uruk-hai and Morannon Orcs laugh at the Citadel Guard's Longbows, so i think those points are better spent on a couple more warriors or a horse for a hero.
