hey guys.

Im just wondering if a Numenorean army would work. We are currently running a series of 350-500 point games and i was considering giving them a go. I dont have any archers for them at the moment so it would be more just mass spear and sword men with either isildur of elendil in command.
What do you guys think? Will they be a competitive army in smaller games?

They're alright, but not optimal IMHO. Unless you're in a tournament, if you have any WoMT you could just proxy the archers in for numenorian archers. Benefits are higher fight at a reasonable cost, but "reasonable cost" means less armour. D5 on the front lines is essential to keep shooting casualties low, after that you have to rely on good tactics and make sure you have spear support. Elendil is a bear though.

One thing that keeps me from using them more is they bear zero resemblance to Tolkien's description. They're supposed to be the pinnacle of mankind. It just bugs me how feeble they are, especially compared to all the stuff GW's been releasing lately.

so how does this sound?
Elendil with shield 170
11 numenoreans with shield and spear 99
9 numenoreans with shield 81
total 350
21 models 3 might no bows

Im thinking bows wont really make a huge impact on a game of this size and having a really decent hero backed up by a good group of resonable troops i should be able to complete most missions.
My weakness would be cavalry and possibly archers.
What do you think?

At that point level you're better off with a normal captain. The higher fight won't make up for the lower defence. Imagine an uruk army at 350 points, you can get a named captain and 29 S4 warriors with the same fight, and D5/6. No contest. You need to beat those numbers and get some archery.

Elendil is fantastic but you have to make him do the damage, depends what scenario you are playing really. If you can hold your shield wall in place then he can chew his way through 4+ models a turn. He's better in a 500 point army though.

At 350 points my army would be:

Isildur + Shield
15 Men of Numenor with shield
5 Men of Numenor with shield and spear
10 Men of Numenor with bow

Gives you a solid D8 hero who can go into stealth mode if needed, 30 F4 troops will do well, especially if you can tie the opposition up with shielding and press home the advantage with solid numbers. You could drop the shield and have 5 more spears but the extra defence and ability to shield with a F6 hero is probably worth it.
