Does anyone out there know if this is permanent? I do hope not as I would like to finish my collection. I do see this as a potentially worrying trend for the future. They are still available on the U.S. site.

Its been happening a lot recently. They usually disappear from the European sites first, followed by the US site then finally the Australian GW.
As you cannot order from a foreign GW directly, I suggest you find a US resident happy to order it for you at your cost obviously whilst it is still available before they go globally oop. That is what I have done on a few of the latest cull of metals.

I can confirm the dunlendings and modular hills are now no longer available and they have no intention of putting them back in production

Dude just keep an eye on ebay. You'll get more than you need on there. Also visit the trading post.

If ebay follows the usual trend, sellers will list them at two or three times their original retail now that they are oop. I would advise any collectors out there to go through the gw website to pick out the models that have 4 week delivery on them. That usually is a good indication that they will be oop sooner rather than later.
The next to go will be:
Metal dwarf warriors/bowmen, Gimli, Elrond of Rivendell, Amon Hen aragorn, Frodo & Sam 2 (Frodo & Sam 1 already oop), Sam & Bill the Pony, Dying Boromir, Merry & Pippin 1, Merry & Pippin 2, Farmer Maggot, Old Bilbo Baggins, Bullroarer Took, Arvedui & Malbeth, Habarad Captain of Dunedain, Peregrin Took guard of the citadel, Kings of men, Knight of minas tirith standard, Theodred, Gamling without banner, Harad chieftain, Dalamyr, uruk shaman, feral uruks, metal easterlings, khandish cavalry and Death of Gothmog.
Some will be back as finecast/plastic i'd imagine. Others will be gone for good.

The trick to keeping the models on the website is to buy as many as possible. That way they keep casting them.
GW are basically ooping stuff as they run out of stock. So if we keep buying it, they won't remove it.

I suppose that they literally have to cast them in large batches to be economical, and that for £8.00 it is simply a not economical to cast 1 blisters worth.

Their best way of ensuring a blister isn't bought, is by removing it from their range altogether. I'm pretty sure a Gandalf the Grey on horseback would at least have sold well with the latest movie (though not too badly before it either) .. but it hasn't been in production for a year and a half now (or even longer, it's impossible to keep track of).
Besides, other companies can produce similar or larger ranges of metal models without randomly dropping some along the way, even though plenty of those won't see much sales either.

We knew this was coming. Back in June/July when they were set to "Available in 4 weeks", that was a sure sign of the death-knell coming. To be honest I'm surprised they've stuck around this long. But it's like Southy said; many other items were placed on the same listing at the same time, and more than likely they're still here due to a rise in orders coming through.

Maybe we'll see them re-released in FineCast. But either way, they still crop up on eBay often enough.

Acutally these are the Dunlendings with shields and axes, the models that have been removed are the Dunlending Axmen with double handed axes.

The Bowmen have also been removed!
