I've got 2 Mumakil still not painted yet, and my Dwarf backlog is growing smaller and smaller. Therefore, after some thinking, I came up with the followig idea: making some kind of Mountain variant on the Haradrim using Hairy Mumakil. But what'd be the best way to do it and what do you think of the idea.

I think that sounds pretty cool, albeit slightly illogical :D but hey, logic can take a backseat every once in a while...

I suppose what you'd have to do is work your way up the Mumak with greenstuff. I'd start by giving the bottom of their leg greenstuff 'cuffs' and sculpting it to make it look like fur, then, once that's dried, add another cuff that slightly overlaps the previous to give a shaggy effect with the hair getting longer the higher up you go. Keep adding these layers till you reach the top! Do you understand what I mean? Could look for a pic of what I mean by a greenstuff cuff, gimme a sec...

Edit: here's the pic

note the 'cuff' around the troll's arm? I rolled out some GS and wrapped it around his arm, then used a sculpting tool to rake some lines into it to give the effect of fur. You'll need a wet tool for best effects (gosh that sounds dirty) and it helps if you let the GS cure a bit first! This could be a very interesting (and complex) project, I'm excited :D

Okay, then I think I'll start with some practising this week, and start on the Mumakil next week. I'll place the progress on my blog (with an article with links in it in the 'work in progress' part of the OR. Thanks for your help.

My pleasure - don't take my word for gospel, though, there are plenty of other opinions out there that might have a better solution! :D

I've heard of people converting them into Wooly Mumakil to use as allies to an Angmar army. It's veen mentioned many times on One Ring, but not many people ever actually do it, I'd be interested in seeing ine finally.

You will need a lot, and I mean, a lot, of greeen stuff or similar putty. Themewise, not very likely in Tolkoen, but fine in GW's version of Tolkein. If that helps. 8)

One of my local GW's did a mamoth mamuk one but I can't for the life of me find the picture...
IIRC it involved applying lots of 'burnt grass'...

I'll try to find the picture later...

Yes. That's what I was thinking. Couldn't you just Pva it and put coloured flock on it or paint it after?

You could always purchase a wooly mamoth toy and at a Howdah to the top.

I think Schleik and Papo have Good quality wooly mammoth toys for sale that might be the right size.

Ooh, that's a good and cheap idea. I'd need to add another pair of tusks in thet chase though

Post subject:  Re: Mammoth Mumaks - hairy Mumakil

Just looked it up. I found out that the Papo one looks way better, and is better sized, than the Schleich one. So, here are the size of both the original mumak and the sleich edition:
Mumakil:
23.25 cm tall
27.5 cm long (from trunk to tail)

Papo Mammoth:
14 cm tall
22 cm long
So, the sizes differ a bit, but it's okay. But, the price is the thing that actually does differ, as the Papo one cost less then 15 euros. Which mans I'm able to design my own Howdah and get a hairy Mumak for halve the original price. That'll mean I'm able to start working at this new project within a month.
