I'm guessing this is the right place for this kind of question. WIth my range of miniatures gradually expanding, and more and more hours going into getting them all painted up, I find myself wanting for a better and nicer way to store, and eventually transport, them. Right now, I've got nearly everything stuffed into one of those screw organizer things with lots of tiny drawers. Something like this: I've found, however, that spearmen and pikemen really tend to get themselves lodged in there. Metal models rubbing against each other (that sounds wrong) doesn't do much good for the paint job either. Storing my mini's like this is iffy, but transporting them is a plain no-go. I am aware of several manufacturers of cases and foam specifically designed to store and carry miniatures - obviously GW, but also KR Multicase, Sabol, Battlefoam and Feldherr. I've heard positive comments about all - some more than others, mind you. One question remains unanswered, however: how well do LotR mini's fit the "standard" infantry foam trays? Numbers of mini's and, accordingly, bag sizes are individual criteria, but we have our troop sizes in common. With spears and swords going every which way, I'd hate to see myself plucking and cutting at foam trays for days on end. |

I use KR cases. The 50 model trays are perfect for LoTR infantry, no cutting required except for banners, but I haven't tried them with Uruk pikes, I have Moria and Rohan. The Rohan throwing spears do stick out all over the place, but it's not a problem. The 50mm deep pick-and-pluck trays hold my cavalry, troll and bat swarms perfectly too, and it takes no time at all to pluck the compartments out. |

I took some pics. These are KR trays in GW cases, they hold the same number of models as KR's normal trays, but they're sized to fit GW's cases, massively increasing the capacity. The top tray (Free Peoples) holds 50 models, so does the second tray (Rohan....note the spears) and the third tray is 50mm deep and holds the cavalry. Sorry for the blurry pics. |

Cheers, that helps. I assume you mean it increases the capacity of the GW case? 50 mini's per tray versus 36 in the GW trays. |

DingK, yeah that's exactly what I meant. You can also fit 4 trays in the case in place of GW's 3 trays, so you could fit 200 infantry in one case. Gothmog, I think it's Kaiser Rushforth. Here's the link www.krmulticase.com/default.aspx |

I have used a product called Army transport. http://www.saboldesigns.net/armytransport.html I stopped buying them when I reached six. I decided I would rather spend my money on miniatures than bags. I tried stacking the foam trays in comic boxes for a while but I switched to plastic boxes when I was caught by a thunder storm. I have most of may 40 year collection in wooden and plastic boxes. Magnetic trays are generally the best way to store miniatures. I also use a number of Surplus foot lockers and Wooden Soviet rifle boxes to store terrain. I like the metal boxes you use for parts. Some of my friends still use tool boxes. Uniform sized boxes cut down on clutter. Avoid paper if you can but I still have some. The Starwars collection is still in comic boxes. You can see some of the foam trays in the plastic tubs on the right side. Trees and other terrain in plastic tubs LOTR in tubs on the left The work room |
