Ok, ready to plunder our combined wisdom once more ! Have painted up a real stack of cavalry, and I wanted a few black horses. How do you paint a black horse ? Stupid question ? In general I undercoat in black anyway, but there is something missing, I have added some grey highlights/drybrushing to some, but looking at pictures of black horses it still doesn't seem right. I feel there should be a blue in there somewhere ? Any advice ? many thanks |

Yeah, its hard. You have to use a few layers of grey, maybe some grey whit blue. |

Maybe add some black to shadow grey for the blue-greyish color, don't know if it'll work for horses though. If you add a bit of brown (bestial or scorched) to very dark grey It'll look nice as a skin tone. |

I bought a folk-art arcylic paint called "Wrought Iron" from Walmart. It is a very dark shade of gray It looks real good for a black horse as it doesnt look like a pure undercoat and done black. |

I would drybrush with a mixture of 2 or 3 parts black to 1 part midnight blue, followed by a lighter drybrushing with 1 to 2 parts black to 1 part mid. blue. Keeping in mind that I'm not one of the guys known around here for painting skills. Anyway, the reason I suggest it is because I've noticed in my copies of Assassin's Creed that the black horses all have a dark blue tint to the sheen of their fur. |
