I have just snatched 3 paralysed hobbits off ebay and want to do a barrow downs diorama using one of my many spare frodos. However, I cannot get any barrow wights and not only am I kicking myself for not grabbing them when they were released in 03, I also cannot find any useful alternatives. I have a twilight wraith but want to use him for his nazgul shennaigans on weathertop. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Gareew painted some Mantic figures that looked very similar to barrow-wights. You should check out his non-lotr art work he recently posted a few months back.

You mean these?

Image

Set of 5 metal sculpts - as above

Set of 10 restic (resin plastic) models - alt sculpts

Both are £14 RRP.

Alternatively, I think I may have a couple of blisters of Barrow-wights kicking about, but I'd have to check to make sure.

They look good. Are they the metal or the resin ones in your pic? Do you have a pic of them enxt to the GW ones, or even some lotr figures so we can see the scale?

Those are, as stated, the metals. ;-) I'll try and get a comparison shot. The metals are thinner than the Barrow-wight sculpts, but the restic versions are pretty much the same. Not too sure about height.

Yeah these do make a nice substitute, they're not a whole lot campy like some of the other Mantic figures, they look like they fit in well with the realism of the LOTR figures. IMO I think they're better looking sculpts than the GW barrow-wights, but just wondering about the scale comparison as well.

Both these and GW's wights look a bit like they are floating in the air, so I don't think the scale is going to matter to me since they are roughly the same size. I'm definately going to fill my Barrow Wight ranks with these guys.

True, I was thinking that too. When they appear as though floating in the air, does it really matter how tall they could be?

I'm not so concerned about height (though comparable to the GW ones would be good so they can fit in the same unit) but the size of their armour, helmets, skulls, etc since the LOTR range isn't exaggerated as Warhammer is. Mostly.

From L - R

Restic Wraith, Barrow-wight, metal Wraith.

Bear in mind the restic one is on a scenic base, so appears slightly taller than it actually is.

That is actually a great comparison. I hope Morgoths_Crown is paying attention to this since he's the one that posed the question.

These wights will be seen in my Barrow-downs! Thanks for the comparison photo.

My previous candidate for a little variety was this Mithril wight:

The age of the Mithril sculpt is showing; those Mantic wights beat it hands down.

They are great minis. I've got 25 of the metal ones, and 15 of the restic.

I'm planning on getting one of these Cairn Wraiths when they are released to add to my Barrow Wights

I prefer the mantic ones. Will consider these in the future. At the moment I am buying a lot of toy biz action figures for my collection
