I would have liked to have seen 6 movies as much as the next guy, but unfortunately, I don't think you could pull 6, solid, money making movies out of the books. Stuff like the Scouring of the Shire and the Old Forest, while interesting, doesn't fit into the standard movie plot line very well.

There are only so many climactic battles you know?

Again, I'd have liked to have seen it too, but I can see why the producers didn't fund it.

It would NOT have worked for the normale crowd. It could have worked for us lotr fans (real fans) but not for normal people who just wanted to see a movie.

Probably, but who should the films work for? The devoted fans? Or the people who just want to watch a film?

Technically speaking the Scourging of the Shire is in FoTR. It is in Galadriels mirror scene and the images Frodo sees is how PJ chose to depict the Scourging.
Some of the great lines are used elsewhere - Gandlaf to Pippin at Minas Tirith - "and all turns to silver glass..." is what Tom Bombadil said to Frodo.
There are others though I need to refresh the grey matter.
I wasn't keen on Gandalf getting a slap from the Witch King. In the book the confronted at the gates and were locked in each others will before the horns of Rohan diverted the Witch King. Best line ever in the books - Rohan had come...

If you haven't seen the extended versions then you must, they do tell a better story.

Another consideration is the time factor.
If you compare Shawshank Redemption - a classic film in it's own right, but this film was based on a Steven King short story.
Then you have the size and might of LOTR in all it's slendour.
Unless PJ made each film nearly six hours long, you would struggle to get all the content in.
I suppose he had to trade and use a lot of 'artistic licence' in his approach, but credit where credit is due. It's the films that got me started on the treck and I have enjoyed every step.

New Line were obviously attempting to pull in as many people as possible - a quarter of a day would have lost a lot of the casual cinema-goers.
