Over on my blog I have shown the pictures of our recent trip to the Hobbiton movie set / tourist attraction.

A wonderful experience, and a wonderful source of inspiration for terrain and modelling!

Thank you so much for sharing the photos. I would love to visit Hobbiton one day, and guzzle on everything the Green Dragon serves . It must be lovely during nighttime with the lights of Hobbiton illuminating the village.

Oh, was the pie good? (It sure looks so)

Like many others, I would love the chance to visit New Zealand - not solely because of the Middle-earth connection but I have a habit of wandering in mountains and enjoying the peace and the scenery. A day in Hobbiton would be terrific and I would love to visit WETA too. Thanks for the many photos - some of the items like the lamp stand at the Green Dragon show the effort made to create a lived-in atmosphere - there is a little green dragon holding the lamp in his jaws! Fantastic!

I must admit, I am looking forward to doing more of what you suggest, and now that my son is getting older he'll be able to do that with me. Its when you get out to those kinds of places you really see Middle-Earth, that is New Zealand, or New Zealand that is Middle-Earth, whichever way round you want to emphasize it... ;-)

I was at pains to photograph as much as I could share, because, as you say its all the little details that give that richness and 'reality' to the settings created by PJ.

Glad you enjoyed the pics

Hey Scott,
it is awesome to see Hobbiton again for me, for I was there about ten months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Do you have the possibility to take a trip to the South Island, namely to Queenstown - there they offer you LotR scenic drives. A huge lot of the filming was done near Queenstown.
Keep it up 8)
PS: You sure are a lucky guy with your family :)

I must admit we hope to do a full LOTR scenic trip round the South Island as that's where arguably the best locations are to be seen, the scenery being that more breathtaking!

My sons past teacher, recently came back from the Mt Potts station location, NW of Ashburton, where the Edoras / Helms Deep work was done, with great pictures... so that's definitely on the to-do list!

Queenstown is another place we must see...

My word, your Gollum!!!!
Lovely pictures and I'm deeply envious. Living on the other side of the world does make it awkward getting there.
