Post subject:  Moria Expeditionaries

Hi
I was wondering if anyone is interested in a Moria-Expedition-sceneraio/campaign.
If so, this thread could be moved to the campaigna-area to work on it.

Well, the scenerio's are of course based on the Book of Mazarbul cause this is about the attempt to retake moria.

Here's a overview of what kind of battle are discribed:

1. Battle at the Great Gate and the guardroom
this is the place where Flói kills the Great Chieftain(goblins) and got Flói killed

2. The dwarfs took the First hall

3. the dwarfs took the Twenty-first hall

-The dwarfs have found armories of the Third deep
in a campaign this could mean they may have more wargear
for a scenerio it could mean a scenerio in the Third deep to get the armories. Balin gets Durin's axe.

3.5(Amost forgot this one). Balin got shot by a goblin archer (from behind a rock) at Dimrill Dale. The other dwarfs came and killed the goblin. But other goblins came from the east and the dwarfs had to retreat. The dwarfs are now trapped in Moria and have to find a way out.

4. Battle at Khazad-dum and the Second hall
Frár, Lóni and Nali died like many other dwarfs. the dwarfs fall back to the Chamber of Mazaral

-Óin and company are on their way to find a way out

5. Óin+companay battles against the Watcher of the Water
Óin dies. Only four of the company returned to the Chamber of Mazaral

6. The Dwarfs are trapped in the Mazaral. Drums in the deep. Ori dies(as last named character) like every other surviving dwarf.

Enough scenerio's to play

Let me know what you think

You forgot about balin. you could have a scenario about when he dies. Although it would be hard to kill him with goblin archers.

I have done it.

yes
i notedBalin vs some archers down on some paper, someway i didnt post it here

so here's 3.5: Balin got shot by a goblin archer (from behind a rock) at Dimrill Dale. The other dwarfs came and killed the goblin. But other goblins came from the east and the dwarfs had to retreat. The dwarfs are now trapped in Moria and have to find a way out.

it could be awesome to create a goblin archer-hero with a deadly shot rule or something(just because he killed Balin)

@Gotmog, did you say you created this scenerio?:O i'd love to see it

i believe he just means he killed balin with goblin archers, not that he created some special scenario for it

ah okay, well it is possible with a lucky roll of a dice

what about "converting" the Balins tomb scenerio from the fellowship or the mines of moria into scenerio 6 (6. The Dwarfs are trapped in the Mazaral. Drums in the deep. Ori dies(as last named character) like every other surviving dwarf. )

basicly, its the same area, so it migth be fit for it? and the evil participants doesnt need to change, only the good need to be changed.

I suggest you try and find the Shadow and Flame supplement from 2003. It's out of print, I believe, but some out-of-the-way hobby store or eBay may have one left! It will definitely give you an excellent framework for your own scenarios.

well, i meant the dwarfs that survived so far. but in the chamber of mazaral every dwarf dies(even those who have survived previously)

maybe its time to improve my english grammer:3

do you know if the scenerio's in the book are any good?:O
cause the book has been "discontinued", but maybe it worth it. i've never took a look at it.

The Khazad-dum book has all these scenarios. They look pretty good, though I haven't played them myself.

Really? I thought that book detailed Durin's death at the hands of the Balrog in TA 1980.

Ah, you're right. But worth reading to get a feel for how to scale things.

They're definitely both a great resource for any Dwarf player. Especially since I could see Balin having a group of Dwarf Rangers with him on his trek through the wilds. Their stats are only in the Khazad-dum book.

I've read the Khazad-dum and shaduw&flame review (from lastalliance and here on the one ring)

shadow&flame is about Balin, 4scenerio's about it
while Khazad-dum is about Durin, which has 5 scenerio's
so i think i'll go for shadow&flame and use that, cause it's already about Balin

anyway, the rules of dwarf ranger can be found on the internet etc:3

and i have another question: Did Balin encounter the balrog, cause it isnt noted in the book of Mazaral. but the balrog is already awakend in moria. so i was wondering if balin(or at least some dwarfs who were with him) have seen/fight the balrog.

Well, if you want to use them in games you need to have their stats at hand in case you forget them or your opponent calls them into question. Just print off the page on the GW site. It doesn't have the points cost though...

I can't honestly remember, but I don't think Balin did. After driving the Goblins out of Moria at their arrival, the Expedition didn't encounter much resistance until Balin himself was killed while looking into the Mirrormere. The Balrog was probably commanding the Goblins and directing its' malice towards the Dwarves, but I think it took someone like Gandalf coming into Moria for it to reveal itself.

thats what i thougth. the dwarfs did encounter the watchers of the water, hordes of goblins, probably a cavetroll, but didnt encouter the balrog. just asked to be sure.

well, you could easily find the point of the rangers i guess. i could take a look at the sourcebook in the shop, then i've the points. the stats can be found on the gw-site so that isnt a big issue.

Scenario: The last stand of the dwarves

actually, this is the last scenario in the campaign of which im thinking, but i started with it. this is a convertion of "Balins tomb" in the fellowship journeybook.
anyway, here's the description:

Suffering from the great losses from the fights with the goblins, the dwarves pulled back. they are now trapped in the chamber of mazaral. and than they start to hear it: Drums in the deep. Will this be their last stand or can miracles really happen?

Participants

Good
Ori with the book of Mazaral and armor(see below)
Dwarf captain
Dwarf captain with shield
2 Dwarf warriors with shield
2 Dwarf warriors with 2-handed axe
2 Dwarf warriors with bow
2 Dwarf rangers with bow
2 Dwarf rangers with 2-handed axe
2 Dwarf rangers with throwing weapons
3 Khazad-guard

Evil
2 Goblin captains
24 Goblins(8with shield, 8bow, 8spear)
1 cave troll

Layout
a 42-42cm board(18 by 18 inch)
with in the middle of it Balins tomb
in the north is a doorway with a diameter of 7cm
well, and the rest, you can guess it for yourself. it's balins tomb after all

Starting positions
The good side deploys within 14cm of Balins tomb.
the evil player doesnt deploy yet

Objectives
Evil wins if 50% of the good side is slain at the end of the game.
in any other situation the good side wins.

Special rules:
The game last for 10 turns. at the end of each evil movement fase the evil player may take 5 goblins (not currently on the board) and place them by the doorway/gate(this includes casualties). therefore the evil models automaticly pass couragetest for being broken.
from turn 4(or later) the cave troll may move onto the board(same way as the goblins).
The goblin captains and the cave troll may not return to the board if they're slain. The normal goblins may return to the board like described above.

Ori's profile, points: 60
F S D A D C M W F
6 4 6 1 2 5 3 2 1
+5points for armour
+15points book of mazarbal

with the book of mazaral you get:
-2F(because Ori needs to carry the book)
+2C(because he has more courage to protect the book)
and his standfast range is 28cm instead of 14cm(because the dwarves are more willingly to listen to Ori in order to protect the book)

(i figured out his profile using a calculator, i hope it fits the character well. when i'll make more scenarios more characters will come, but for so far this is it.)

i hope you like the scenario
all critic is welcome, cause it's my first scenario and i hope it turns out well(at least in my case it did)

like the scenario but isn't 10 turns to few?
i mean with a dwarfs defence they aint likely to die in a combat and 10 turns go by rather quickly.

by the way the book won't do any good in this scenario. if you're good you'll already have lost the game if you get broken, so more courage and stand fast! is totally a waste of points, not to mention you're only named character will have -2F!
for the other scenario's this might be a great rule but for this one alone i'd say change it a little, so it's more of an advantage for the good side then just a annoying bundle of paper.

just my 2 cents anyway...

good points
maybe i should make the book optional, because it can works great in other scenario's

and well, about the turns, maybe i could make it like, minor victory and major victory(for both evil and good).
only have to figure out how much turns it will take to get i balanced. the problem is, it has to be played many time and not only by me and some friends:3
