Hi guys,

I'm not sure whether you have to strip the paint off a model to repaint it, just paint over, or spray/prime it again

Just won some elves from eBay and some of them are half painted.

What do I have to do to get them to a stage where I can paint them myself?

Thanks,
LordElrond

The metals you can clean with nailpolisher and a toothbrush.
The plastics you have to give a new primer.

So for plastics, all I have to do is respray them?

That's waht i do. I you use the nailpolisher on plastic, it's not so good for the plastic if you know what I mean ...

You can use simple green to strip the paint off of both plastic and metal. let them soak for a day or two, then take a tooth brush to them while running them under water.

Alternatively you can reprime and paint them, but the more layers of paint you have the more obscure the details become.

@ IsleStaggerHolm: painting over one layer won't make a difference, will it?

Also, what do you mean by "simple green"?

Simple green is the name brand of a product: http://www.simplegreen.com/

Just use the orginal formula cleaning product in a cup or jar and soak the minis. As far as will painting over one layer diminish details, then the answer that it will certainly have an affect, but you'll have to decide what is acceptable for you and your desires.

Just re undercoat them. You only need to strip them when the previous paint job is really thick or uneven.

I'd strip them allways - ended up regretting not doing this after I did four repaints on my dwarves and killed every little bit of detail.

I use Dettol to strip plastics - see the thread I made on it, it should still be high up in "Help with miniature figures".
