Fantastic news, and perfect timing for myself! Eomer is coming up soon in my painting schedule, glad I'll be able to use this new version :D Now I just need to decide what posing to choose for him :?

Same! All of the poses! :-D

There's at least 8 different choices I think for the mounted version. Including the horse options that is.

Interesting article about the design of the new model. Shows some more pictures of the model and the sprue too!

Don't really need the model, but tempted just for all the conversion parts!

I got my pre-order in for Eomer. Came just at the right time for me, as I am starting to paint Rohan :)

Pretty impressive that it sold out so quick. I reckon it's such a nice model that it's pulling new people into the game who don't normally buy Middle Earth.

Well, I have plenty of backlog to work through while I wait for it to come back!

I think it's great news for the hobby that it sold out so quick. It'll be back soon.

I also really hope the Mumak War Leader comes back. Never managed to grab one and it's been temporarily out of stock for ages!

Looked at what is in the Best of White Dwarf, would probably disagree that these were the best but here is what I feel about the choices.

- Orcs Attack! (White Dwarf 263) - this is a great choice, great battle report on a custom built board. Reasonable amount of figures to play. Was also in the Best of White Dwarf for the Fellowship

- Flight to Freedom (White Dwarf 396) - don't know anything about this

- The Battle for Erebor (White Dwarf December 2017) - do not have this issue, but remember playing this would be costly with the models involved.

- The Battle of Pelennor Fields (White Dwarf September 2018) - Came out just after the boxset, involved three Mumaks.

- A Clash of Companies (White Dwarf April 2019) - 4 companies in 6 battles, nothing special in my mind.

- The Search for the Stone (White Dwarfs January and February 2018) - 5 linked narrative scenarios

- Duel of Zirakzigil (White Dwarf 281) - Gandalf vs the Balrog - in the Best of WD Two Towers, also available as a pdf at dchobbitleague (DC)

- Fiends and Fireworks (White Dwarf 309) - available at DC

- Fatty Bolger's Great Escape (White Dwarf 311) - available at DC

- The Hunt for Gollum (White Dwarf 302) - available at DC

- Warg Chase in the Wilderness (White Dwarf September 2017) - Thorin's company chased by Yazneg and hunter orcs, used Radagast on sled. Second scenario used mounted Elrond and Rivendell Elves vs hunter orcs.

- The Bigger they Are... (White Dwarf 307) - don't know anything about this

- The Brown Wizard (White Dwarf April 2018) - Two quick narrative scenarios, Attack on Rhosgobel 4 spiders vs Radagast, Exploration of Dol Guldur, Radagast vs the Witch King, Nazgul of Dol Guldur

- River Assault Rules (White Dwarf 294) - in Best of White Dward Return of the King and at DC

- War of the Long Lake (White Dwarf April 2017) - don't know anything about this

- Armies of Middle-earth (White Dwarf November 2018) - Basically an article talking about changes to building an army using the new rules.

- Magic of Middle-earth (White Dwarf December 2018) - don't know anything about this.

- Modelling Workshop – Mordor Terrain (White Dwarf 344) - available at DC

- Flight of the Nazgûl (White Dwarf 365) - don't know anything about this

- Paint Splatter – Théoden, King of Rohan (White Dwarf September 2018)
- Paint Splatter – Gandalf the White and Pippin (White Dwarf December 2018) - seems like both paint guides should be in the Citadel App vs here.

Not sure if the scenarios will still be available at DC after this book comes out.

Flight to Freedom (White Dwarf 396) is in the December 2012 edition. It's the goblintown scenario, whre Thorin + company + Gandalf try to escape against the Goblin King an 36 Goblins. The pictures show a impressive Goblin town board. I suppose, the article was written to explain the -then - new rules for heroic actions, special strikes and monster attacks.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts (and the contents) of the book, Mapper. I gave pre-ordering it some thought but decided to wait and see what is in it first and I'd have to say that this is a bit underwhelming. It makes me wonder if they know DCHL had made a lot of these old articles available currently and the cost to value proposition seems a bit off to me. Maybe some reviews of it once it comes out will make me change my mind but for now, I'm glad I saved my money!

I'm skipping this one. If they'd done it in a magazine format at a third of the price would probably have picked up, but as a premium hardback it's a bit too expensive.

Alex123 - I agree, $50 US seems a little extreme for this.

Some of the scenarios I mentioned being available at DCHobbitLeague are quite nice scenarios, and would like them in a printed format again vs a pdf, but not worth the price of some of the other articles they included.

The ones I know about: Orcs Attack!,The Search for the Stone, Duel of Zirakzigil, Fiends and Fireworks, Fatty Bolger's Great Escape, The Hunt for Gollum, The Brown Wizard are nice inclusions, some of the newer articles not so much.

Seems like a well-considered assessment. Too bad the book isn't better; you have to think that with 15+ years of material that GW would have plenty of primo stuff to pull from.

I look forward to forming my own opinion in (*knocks wood*) a couple of days.

Thanks! This is what I feared and why I decided not to purchase this one. I also think €40,- is way too steep a price for a collection of articles that were all printed before.

Post subject:  Re: A review of the Best of MESBG White Dwarf

Having now received my copy and gone through it, I actually have a slightly more positive feeling about it then seems to be consensus here

I think a lot depends on how much of the material would be new to you. When GW more or less gave up on SBG when the hobbit trilogy flopped, I let my WD subscription lapse and only picked up the odd issue or two based on recommendations here.

So while, yeah, I have some duplicated material, the vast majority of it was new to me. And some of the duplication means I can throw out my ratty-edge pages torn from the magazine that I decided to keep.

Did it need to be a hardback? Nope. Is every article truly "The Best of White Dwarf"? Not by my standards.

So not a home run, the way to my mind the War in Rohan and Scouring of the Shire (both versions!) books were. But not unworthy, and I don't regret the purchase.

YMMV.
