Hey folks
Check out this discussion on TLA:
http://www.terrainguild.com/thelastalli ... f=8&t=2310
Appears there are rumours of a Mines of Moria type set for WOTR, but with Gondor vs Mordor as the armies.
Cheers
Tom

Yep, well it sounds like they're finally trying to gas the last life out of SBG. Although there still isn't any proper proof.

Was talking to my manager buddy, and apparently they're not allowed to SHOW people SBG intro games, people have to ask for them, they can only introduce WotR to them.
So yeah, bye bye sbg! :( Sad really, because at the moment, there's more sbg games going on than fantasy at my store.

Also the store intro boards HAVE to have gondor and morannon orcs, so I think that may hint at what's in the starter ;)

Thats very interesting about what the stuff can/can't do...

In theory, LoTR is next in line for a new starter set - If they want to put the money into it that is.

However, it would be very boring to see 24 WoMT and 24 orcs with trays...

With fantasy and 40k starter sets, they take metals and make them into plastics JUST for that box. for example, swordsmen of hoeth.

So aren't we all just dieing to see a big box worth of starter material.

Like Plastic commanders and troops. But more importantly, maybe a single company of 8 elites in plastic. like RRG, guards of the fountain court, mordor uruks, beserkers.

=)

James.

They like to have a variety of things, to demonstrate all the different rules

So I'm going to predict some bog standard infantry, some archers/rangers, knights, and then some sort of elite unit or character. All with command options I presume.

Orcs will probably get a shaman, so the magic area is covered, as well as a monster of some sort. Then just infantry.

So cavalry, shooting, infantry, magic and monsters will all be covered.

IF they may new models/sprues for all of them will be another thing... or they could just package up the box sets already out there.
Another possibility is making 1 sprue with the command/characters in plastic and then just adding in the other sprues from existing sets, as lotr figures are mainly push fit anyway.

Stupid Speculation!

Maybe not Gondor, exactly, but Numenor? Plastic Numenoreans doing battle with 2nd Age Orcs?

/End Stupid Speculation.

Welllll, I just spent a bunch of money buying a lot of Gondor models, and a bunch of money buying some more Rohan models, but...eh, if there's anything interest in this set, I'll probably go buy it. Because I'm dumb that way :D

Unfortunately, I have more sad news to bring on the subject, my friends.

At my local GW the same has happened, but alas, that isn't the worst of it. SBG has also lost a vital influx of young gamers. The SBG beginners games/club (which was about 6-12 members strong at any one time) has been scraped in favour of WotR beginner games/club. I also discovered that this isn't exclusive to my GW, it's being rolled out all over the UK. It was done very subtly as well. First of all they introduced WotR as an alternative (running at the same time, but not much intrest was shown), then the Staff became more involved, some (the friendly ones who I know well) lent people their models to play the WotR beginner games with, then they just scrapped the SBG games all together after 50% had been swayed over to the Dark Side.

This only happened a month ago, the week after I returned from my holiday.

I'll probably buy the box, if only to get a pocket sized version of the WotR book (rather than the huge paperweight I spent £35 on) and the orcs and wargs.

And now for some specultaion:

The box has to have a plastic epic hero (or even a legendary formation) for both sides in it, because the WotR rules state that you have to have at least one an Epic Hero (or a Legendary Formation) since you have to choose a named hero (in effect) to be your leader before you pick any other troops..

it already takes gw to release rules for sbg a month after the models release. do you really think they'll kill sbg completely? :(

Though it is sad that SBG is being killed, it might be a good thing, as if they make it into a specialist game, the rules and sourcebooks and stuff will be free to download as pdfs on the GW website.

Still its pretty stupid that they can't do starter games or anything for it. WotR was supposed to be an EXPANSION, not something that replaces the SBG. Maybe the mini rulebook in the starter set will not be called War of the Ring, but it will be called the SBG, and they will reprint the SBG rules and call it LotR Skirmish....

Still looking forward to new Gondor and Mordor models. I will probably buy this set just for that, though I will get the WotR rules too so I might just start WotR as well.

Well that is what they have been doing, publishing the profiles in White Dwarf, and they are saying that they will keep doing it...hopefully.

For the starter box, plastic Citadel guard and Mordor Uruks would be great! Especially Citadel guard with bows.

That's a very good point, I hadn't considered that. Given the rumoured forces I'd speclate Gothmog and Faramir.

If they are makin' a starter box, I'll put my guesses on pellenor fields!
They might have som small terrain pieces (Like MoM and Skull pass/black reach)

So Gandalf/Witch King or Gandalf/Gothmog perhaps.

Okey probably not Witch king.....

I dont have an Wotr army but if this box actully releases then I might consider it!

Wow. The longer I pay attention to this game, the more I despise GW as a corporation. Clearly the customer has spoken and SBG remains more popular. It's such a cynical move to jam the corporate choice down the customer's throat.

games workshop really are rather stupid in their marketing. The SBG has a much lower Item need, and is thus much easier to get into. From there, you can introduce them to WOTR, not the other way around.

'Oh, right, you've bought several hundreds of the same troop type, now, you could actually play a rather nice game with 1/10th of that, want me to show you?'

In the War of the Ring Quickstart rules, there are two small armies featured for a starter battle, Gondor and Mordor. The Gondor army is made up of 2 companies of Minas Tirith Warriors, 1 company of Minas Tirith archers, 3 companies of Minas Tirith knights, and 3 companies of Rangers of Gondor; the Mordor army is made of 3 companies of Morannon Orcs, 3 companies of Warg Riders, 2 companies of orc warriors, and 1 Mordor Troll. My bet is that this starter boxed set will include forces similar to those featured in the Quickstart rules, if not exactly the same. I'm also going to guess that it will be $99, and GW will severely downplay The Strategy Battle Game afterwards. I think, however, that GW has proven to itself time and time again that SBG and WotR can easily go hand in hand to provide an effective and enjoyable campaign experience, and having War of the Ring sized forces with the rules for both systems would bring in quite a lot of money. That being said, if this boxed set is to actually be released, I'd consider purchasing it strongly, as I've never played War of the Ring, and I'd like to try it, and those models could bolster SBG forces easily.

I agree with this, their marketing tactics are just....insane!

I guess we should have been expecting this. It will be interesting to see what models will be included...

My Guess they will do a basic plastic Troll Chief, like the basic Troll in the SBG starter set, very poor compared to the metal or boxed plastic Troll.

Use as many current plastic spurs as possible from Mordor & Gondor to keep production cost down.

May be a plastic Heros such as Aragorn Mounted, Gothmog, Whitch King, etc.

Put in a few movement trays, mini dice and starter book along with a mini WOTR rule book.

If the new stuff looks good I will buy it and put with all the other stuff I plan to paint in the next 20 or so years.
