Spent along time on this one, its been sitting around for a few years, recently I have mainly been painting older figures, as well as working on Weathertop. IMO the older sculpts have more quality feel about them, its hard to put into words but they just feel better for some reason.

Please note the horse shoe.

I agree about the older sculpts - they definitely have a better look to them. Personally I think they are more realistic, certainly the metals. I recently put myself under a strict code to collect only LotR minis and no Hobbit, specifically metals as I just feel that the range is of a higher standard.

I am still yet to acquire that Boromir although I have been thinking about it for a while. It is a very nice sculpt indeed.

Lovely work Paul. A simple but effective base and a smooth paint job. Nice touch with the dirt on the cloak that has been done really well.
I would like to see some thin highlights on the highest points to bring out the definition a little more - like the area along the back of the horses neck.

Outstanding work. I particularly like your paint job on Boromir's cloak. The horse shoes are a nice touch. I need to go back and do this for all my horses now!

That is a great version of Boromir, the fallen son. The gold trim on the cloth came out very well. I really like the shield as well, the color is just right.
The horse socks I am not feeling, the transition color doesn't look natural, but I would have to look at pictures myself (I almost always use pictures of real horses when painting a horse).
The horse shoe is interesting exercise, most often they are so full of mud, dirt, rust and black whatever (having watched the Ferrier several times do all the horses at the local ranch multiple times) that you would not see the metal colors easily, but it is nice that you made an effort.

Thought i would do a more distressed look to these 3 guys, when i watched DOS again the Orcs are much more "dull" than the GW painted versions. They are great sculpts with lots of surprise detail.

I decided i wanted a rusty look to the armour but not the weapon, as if they had been out side for a long time in all weather conditions, but look after there weapons.

Rusty orcs always preferred. They look great, and the red cloth reminds me of Morannon (nostalgic).

did you use traditional rusting methods (orange paint) or did you use the new dry rust medium stuff Gw is selling? both I think can achieve this result but just curious.

Thanks guy's, Sithious I used the following -

Scorched Brown base colour.
Stipple Vermin Brown, then Stipple Blazing Orange
Then light dry brush of a dull silver

but don't give up the day job (or the other one)

Great work on the Orcs and the rust is really effective on them.

Very nice rust effects Paul. You have taken them down a different slant that I really like. They just look far more authentic IMO.

This is work in progress, i have spent ages on this, building up the greys and then using my experience from model Military Vehicle building using dry colours to create a natural rock effect. I have a lot more work to do, removing some of the powders and adding other different colours.

If you look at page 16 of this WIP you can see a test piece.

These are Photo-etched metal plants that i will be using at a later stage
