Hi everyone. Was having a bit of trouble with the skin on one of the female rangers with her face completely exposed (it was too white in tone) so I put it to one side and did this one instead.

I decided to paint the skin with Tanned Flesh, wash Reikland Fleshshade and then (instead of Cadian Fleshtone, Kislev Flesh and Kislev Flesh + White Scar for highlights) I applied a Dwarf Flesh highlight followed by two further highlights adding in White Scar each time. I really like the look so I think I'll be using this recipe from now on. The pics don't really do the highlights on the face justice but hopefully you'll get the general idea.

Also I made a milkjug lightbox and have been trying it out. Unfortunately it is using a 1L carton rather than a 2L one so I have to crop the photos each time but I think it still does the job. I'm curious to see whether you guys think the pics look better now. I'm still a bit undecided.

Anyway, the pics. C & C welcome and I'd appreciate feedback on the new skin tone as well. Thanks

This looks excellent. A simple colour scheme that has been executed brilliantly. The photo looks a first class job to me.

The more I see of your work on these figures the more I like them. Brilliant

Lovely models and a lovely paint job. Although the pictures are IMO a little dark so the details are hard to see.

Thanks for all the comments guys! :)

This is a little post to say not to expect much in the way of updates on this thread until February. I've tidied my Hobby stuff into my dedicated cupboard until I am less busy. I might get an hour or so of painting done every now and again and if I have anything done, I'll try to post it here.

Once I've finished my last 4 Rangers, I will be moving on to either a Barrels out of Bond or Bilbo and Gandalf Bag End diorama for the competition. I was already going to do both but I've shifted them forward a bit due to the timing of the challenge and I'm really looking forward to getting started!

Even though you will be in direct competition with me I am more than happy to offer you any advice I can. Good luck.

@ Gandlaf - Yes, I have been drawing inspiration from your thread for a while. I will probably just be doing the doorway and a tiny bit of the wall either side. A bit of stonework on the ground outside and the fancy flooring inside. I'll also add in all the little details. Your stunning piece will certainly be a great resource to draw on :)

Thanks Madfrog!

So it's been about month since I last updated this but managed to get some painting done last weekend and today. My Mirkwood Rangers project is nearly all done so here's a little update of my latest escapades.

This one is a WIP with only the skin fully done. Hope to get it completely finished tomorrow.

I finished off the base on this one today and looking at it now probably rushed the Static Grass a bit but it'll do. It's probably my favourite sculpt of them (although the masked one is great too) and it was fun to paint.

Hope you guys like it and C & C welcome :)

Great painting and your milk bottle light box is working well, did you get a 2lt, I did and have never drunk so much milk in my life!

No I actually used a 1L one, which can be a bit of a nuisance as it adds in an extra step to uploading cos I have to crop it every time. Still it does the job well enough.

Fantastic minis, I too like the stooping ranger. You've also persuaded me to get some rangers I think... :/

I'm going to give the milk carton thing another go, any tips? Mine didn't seem to let enough light in last time

I would advise sellotaping the front of your paper lining to the milk carton to make it more secure if using a 1L one.

Also, I've found placing the lamp very close to the top of the milk carton gives the best distribution of light and brightness of image.

Hope this helps

Cheers, I'll give it a try tomorrow. Once I've had about 27 cups of tea to finish the milk off... ;)

The finished ranger looks great. I disagree on the grass, the random look of wild grass looks far better than it all in one direction, that would be a lawn and that's not what this figure is about.
