What is the definition of a hero? Is it anything with Might? I ask this because in the Battlehosts I bought today it says under MM fates that the stolen Mithril coat can be used on one Goblin or epic hero? So who can that be given to?

Yes, having might is the definition of a hero. Anyone who begins the game with might is a hero and can do all the normal hero things.

So could the coat be given the Balrog then? Upping his Resilience to 3?

Is the Mithril blended with Lycra? It would need to stretch for a Balrog...

@NotLegolasJustTipsy just so long you're aware that a Balrog and Dragon are considered rare formations and not epic heroes and definitely not Goblin heroes.

Exactly, the stolen coat says that the hero it is given to must be a goblin. I am certain that it means "goblin (hero or epic hero)" not "(goblin hero) or epic hero", so basically it can be given to druzhag, durburz, a goblin captain or a goblin shaman.

So Goblin hero /Epic Hero? So can I give it to say Khamul?

The Dragon and Balrog are indeed Heroes.... as they have Might as outlined above.

However they are also defined as 'rare' formation choices too as pointed out above. This means they are heroes still but not EPIC heroes. They cannot lead the Misty Mountains Faction. Epic Heroes are defined as such specifically in theier descriptions.

For example. Glorfindel and Sauron are single model figures with Might and are defined as Epic Heroes (and Glorfindel also counts as a flying monster), but the Troll Chieftan, (as well as the Dragon and Balrog) who are also Monstrous Heroes are not Epic Heroes.

However, to answer the question the Mithril coat fate from the BH expansion can only be given :
1. If you have either Battlehost in your army and have paid the poinst cost.
2. To Durburz, Druzhag, a goblin Captain, goblin prowler captain, or a Gundabad Blackshield Captain, Goblin Shaman, Prowler Shaman, Blackshield Shaman. (not warg captains, balrog etc...)
3. Another allied epic hero (eg. Nazgul... Sauron...) * in your army

* The Fate can be given to people not in the Battle host.. you just need the battlehost to access the list in the first place.

I believe this is incorrect. The Fate can be given to

Quote:
one Goblin Hero or Epic Hero in your army.

I am certain that is meant to mean "one Hero or Epic Hero that is Race:Goblin", NOT "One Hero who is Race:Goblin or any Epic Hero"

Which is what I said 3 posts ago.

Is there an official technical rule to applying Fates to a unit outside the main Battlehost, and/or even to an allied unit of the main army?

I would think that the Battlehost Fates would be Faction-specific in that they are only meant to be used by members of that particular faction, otherwise why not just add them to the Alignment-specific Fates and Fortunes? Though I would think you would be able to apply a Fate outside the Battlehost.... I'll admit I'm taking a guess on this one.

No, because Khamul isn't a Goblin.

It means Goblin hero, or Goblin epic hero.

We are talking about Games Workshop here. They seem to have problems with this sort of thing.

It does say that, GW see no reaon to repeat the word Goblin, they could justa s easily have said Goblin Epic Hero or Hero, why write Goblin twice for preciseness, when you can write it once and save ink especially since most peple can tell what they mean.

This is another sad example of where the intention is pretty clear, and the rule is written appropriately, but because it's not written with exclusive precision there is a gap for (mis)interpretation.
