Would changing the number of minis on a company from 8 to 6 imbalance the game somehow or does anyone foresee any problems? Im trying to get my cousin to play and the number of figures is kinda tough, but becomes easier with smaller companies. Although a big formation of 6 companies still come to 36 minis. But thats still easier than 48.

See 6 elves still look nice as a unit. its kinda cute actually.

:orc: :orc: :orc:

awww. even orcs look cute too. sorta...
Since I havnt played any games yet and I just finished reading the rules, Im only seeing that the changes from cuttting infantry companies down from 8 to 6 will be:

1) companies take less casualties before getting wiped out . I would have to lessen the company points costs by 25%, i think, if my math is right.

2) companies make less attacks

3) the base size of the company is shorter, and also the formation will take up less space and be more maneuverable? (this could be nice, since I only have a 4x6 table, i would get more companies in a smaller gaming space)

And thats all I see, am I missing something?

You are missing something, most plastic boxes are in muktiples of 8 and so are the new finecast clampacks, it's eases of buying, you won't end up with any leftover models for 8s but you would for 6s

Hi there gothmogy! U are up late, or early, depending on where u are in the world.

yeah, but then if I buy 3 boxes, I can have 6 companies instead of just 4 companies.
If i buy 12 boxes I can have 24 companies instead of just 16.
etc...

But I was wondering more about what changes ruleswise...

Hi, yes, up a little late, I wouldn't be buying 12 boxes or anything, the whole idea is that you can buy any number of boxes and always have a whole number of companies. The reason the rules were devised in eights is actually for this reason.

Gamewise, it can benefit small formations like that of prowlers, it'll make killing a Cave Drake too easy IMO.

Hi Hamster Baggins, I tend to base quite a lot of my stuff permanently to pieces of wood in the correct size and use dice as casualty markers. This tends to make things much less fiddly, protect figures better.... and would also allow bases to have fewer figs, if you wanted. :)

Hiya Xelee, great idea, thats exactly what Im gonna do!!!!!!!! my older cousins play serious wargames, and they glue minis all together on bases too.

And I got these tiny itty bitty red dice. they are like super tiny. Now I know what I can use them for.

Yeah it just seems more normal to many of us wargamers. I have some based 'properly' too (mainly so my Vikings can do double-duty) and they are more of a hassle to play with since the figs can fall out of their slots and I have to handle individual casualties. One thing I would suggest though is that things like galeforce9 'hobby rounds' (static grass, flock, etc) are pretty darned cheep and those plus gravel, dried twigs and sand from your neighbourhood can let you take good advantage of those bases to make them more 'scenic' to help compensate for having less figs.

If you thinking of this why not increase cavalry to 3 models per company, and give them only 5/1 attacks on charge instead of 6/2? This would make them less fragile.

That's a good idea. You can get 8-sided dice in large sets as markers. It would also be nice for a Company where you may have infantry but want to have your Hero / Epic on a horse for theme/dramatic purposes. You obviously can't fit 7 infantry base and a cav base on a standard GW-sized movement tray.

Good idea, I've done most of my permanent bases as 8's but have been putting the Epic on Horse alongside them as leader recently - it just looks more cool. It makes sense to build the space into the design of one base in each formation.

GothmogtheWerewolf, I'm basing my new WGF Orcs on permanent bases and in 7s to stretch them further. Since the base is the same regardless and a dice marks casualties (out of 8 or out of 2) then I think its easier just to play all units as normal.

Cheers

I can see the logic behind that Xelee, especially since WGF orcs aren't made in 8s anyway, and since they're for Angmar I'd beintereted in seeing them later if ou want post pics.

They are, sold in a pack of 24 that allows 1/3 archers and then 2/3 as either of polearms or sword + shield. So a pretty good box overall. I just got three boxes in the sale they had a while back then decided to stretch them even further to branch out a little more from my heavy inf fixation!
