Broken Mind, he gets to roll 3d6 for courage tests yet his courage is 0. The odds is not as good as if an Inspiring Hero were near by and you have to use Denethor's courage. So what is the benefit of using Denethor's Guard? I don't get it.

The short answer is, not much.

There may be some utility if you have an opponent who likes to use multiple sunder spirits and visions of woe and the like, since his courage can't be lowered and you always have a little better than 50/50 of passing checks, but that is about it.

Basically, I think when they did the game they decided they had to include rules for as many of the figs that were already available as possible so you get rules for Denethor, Wormtongue, Gollum and the like. The strangest is Tom Bombadil, I can't imagine what he would be doing on a battlefield, and his rules try to jump through so many hoops in order to try and match fluff AND be in any way useful. I'd love to hear of someone actually using him in a game and see how he functions.

Bombadil is disgustingly good- I've known him to be banned from several tournaments.
The ability to gift back might to epic heroes is sweet and well worth the points.
