For my first construction I want to have a go at making a ruin.
I want to base it on the ruins you see the fellowship chilling out at before they are divided at the end of fellowship of the ring.

Has anyone got any good pics of it? or know the name so I can look it up?
My films are at my other house and I wont be going there till after the weekend.

Thank you Farmer Giles. Yes Amon Hen.

I seem to have mis-remebered. I thought this was a ruin. The pic shown is quite 'intact'. I want to make some sort of multi level platform with 2 or 3 sets of stairs.
The fellowship will start at the top and have to get off the platform to an objective. like in moria there will be trap doors at the bottom of each steps for goblins to pop up at the start of each turn.

I'll have a mock up game on some paper 1st.

Actually, I think what you're after is just to the east of Amon Hen, more along the beach. Amon Hen proper, the picture shown, is the Hill of Seeing. In the film, it was surrounded by ruins, mostly to the effect of toppled walls & statues.

What I would do is see what I could do about setting up the building Farmer Giles has shown you, but put more effort into setting up/knocking down some walls so that they look like they were abandoned centuries ago. I'd also see about getting a few action figures (LOTR Numenoreans would be best, but expensive at this point) and chopping them up a little for statues like the one Boromir confronts Frodo at.
(sorry, I'm at work & can't find any images online)
But, if I understand you, what you're after is a beach, leading into woods, with ruins scattered throughout.

You are quite correct. It was quite ruined in the movie, this is just the upper part. Below it is a forest with a nice set of ruins.

If you are feeling realy adventourous, there is a guide on how to put together the upper most building, but WARNING this is very hard
http://www.one-ring.co.uk/phpBB2/kb.php?mode=article&k=30
If not i would just suggest a piece of ruined stairs, going through a forest with other ruins (the forest floor should be covered in leaves...) the forest should be sloping sorta downward..

I remember that one. It's brilliant - and probably makes the project easier than it would be otherwise - but I don't think I would want to do that much work myself. :o

the one rider - Great idea about the Numenoreans. I'll order some (as its my birthday this week!). They will make great statues.

What I really wanted was a central ruin to put on a board (approx 30x20cm). I'm not going to build a whole board yet. I quite like the idea of having an assault and the objective is to get Froders and Sam to the boat.

I've come up with a design I quite like I'll post a pic when i get chance. Tho I prob wont start constructing in for a couple of weeks as I've just got Tom B, and a few other metals to paint.

I dont think i'll be able to make it as complex as the one in the pic. I'm planning to make the platforms 1 and 3 inches high, so that it only needs 6-7 steps leading up to it and each step will be long enough to hold a figure. The fellowship will all start on the ruin and have to fight a route out for frodo and sam.

Thanks for all your input. I'll keep this updated in case anyone has more suggestions.

I think every one forgets that most of the props and sets in a movie get recycled. If you pay close attention you will find the archway in the forest on the approach to Amon Hen is the same archway used at Helms Deep, Minas Tirith and again at Osgiliath nice thing GW included it in the new Osgilath kit.

If you keep the element small you will be able to use them over and over and in all kind of different ways.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Hey Manofkent.
I made a board like this for a fellow LotR player a few years ago.

LINK To more info on the build. Hope it's helpful?

Cheers,
Steve.

This is my favorite of the smaller pieces on Steve's site.

http://onyxworkshop.files.wordpress.com ... =470&h=444

It is a perfect example of a piece that could be used any where in Middle Earth

Hi Russell,

Here’s a model that I‘ve built recently of one of these Amon Hen ruins. I think this is the one you’re looking for (?). You’ll find a few more ‘Making Of…’ pictures at: http://www.lotrscenerybuilder.org/parth_galen.php

Image

I’d love to see your version somewhere near in the future. Keep us informed!

To the lotrscenerybuilder. Have you switched to polystyrene? If not I off in the pickup for a load of MDFB. I have to build one. Inspired as always.

Yeah I deff will. But its not going to be anything like the quality these guys can produce. Plus I live away from home to work, so I'm only home at weekends.

I'm holidaying for the next few weeks but I've got time off in July. So I hope to get it all done then. I'll just make sure I've got everything I need before I start.

Anyone - - -

As suggested before I want to use some of the guys from this era as statues on my terrain. I've got the warriors of the last alliance. But they are all in attacking stances. There just not convincing as staues.

Any ideas? I'm not too shabby at sculpting, but i'd rather convert something if i can.

Don't get discouraged about the quality you produce. There are 10 year old's on this site that are better than I was when I first started.

The Osgilath kit contains two statues. A friend of mine uses action figures for statues. A little puddy and paint and you will think why did I not think of that. Old chest set pieces work well. A Knight on a wedding cake pillar for example.Don't forget the pet store .I made a very nice rock pool from a water dish.

I am looking forward to see what you come up with.

Any advice on what book I might buy?

I've got a bunch of the lotr mags off ebay but they are directed at buying games workshop products and squeezing you for as much cash as poss.
