I don't know if you can recall this, but before the GW site was remade, it contained an article on making a board similar to the one you are describing. The board was a tunnel system, with several niches containing details such as skulls, dead bodies, etc. It was painted in a similar fashion to the MoM board. I couldn't find the article, however. Sorry!

If I were you I would be taking a look at the Two Towers movie, in the dead marshes. It's simple and evocative, you'll do you normal sized board but make it swampy using lots of water effects, dead winter grasses, and scrub brush bits. You could go really crazy and model some Army of the Dead as coming out of the water, or perhaps laying within the water which ever.

I think that would look mighty fine for a display board of the Dead.

LotRscenerybuilder made a lovely paths of the dead model that looks like it came straight out of the movie. Maybe you can gain some inspiration from it? Find it here.

Well, what I had mentioned before was the Paths of the Dead, but actual paths and tunnels, not a broad open section--now that I've seen what wibls mentioned, I think you should try to make that. Perhaps PM LotRSceneryBuilder for info.

Have you started on anything yet, BTW?
